Breeders’ Cup Friday, Nov. 1, at Santa Anita Fifth Race (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint) 1. Four Wheel Drive 2. Bulletproof One 3. A'Ali FOUR WHEEL DRIVE is the one to beat in this 5f turf sprint for 2-year-olds. He scored stylish wins both starts, he has speed but is versatile, and could get a great trip forwardly placed. Not sure how much serious gas in this lineup. Maybe not much? Also-eligible BULLETPROOF ONE would be a serious threat to wire the field if she drew in. She chased a blazing pace and missed by only a head on this course/distance one month ago. She also is entered in race 3. A'ALI is a three-time Group 2 winner from Europe, while fellow import BAND PRACTICE is unproven against top company but has an up-front style that would play well if the pace scenario comes up light. KIMARI is another logical contender with versatility. She has won setting the pace, and rallying from last. Sixth Race (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf) 1. Arizona 2. Hit the Road 3. Decorated Invader European shippers won nine of 12 editions of the BC Juvenile Turf; ARIZONA may follow suit. Runner-up behind undefeated European superstar Pinatubo in a Group 1 last out in the U.K, ARIZONA arrives as the class of the field for trainer Aidan O'Brien, who won this race four of the last eight years. Locally based HIT THE ROAD faces a class challenge, because California-based 2yo turf runners typically do not compare to Europe/Midwest/East Coast runners. However, the comeback stakes win by HIT THE ROAD was visually impressive. He smoked the final quarter mile in a fast :23.14 and won going away. Perhaps not much behind him, but the who's to say how good he might be? Look for him storming late. Outside post no concern, he will drop out early and come with a run. DECORATED INVADER followed his sharp maiden victory with a decisive victory in the G1 Summer at Woodbine. He broke slowly, was hard-held, uncorked a strong turn of late foot and won "ridden out." Big win by an improving colt who figures as a strong contender. PEACE ACHIEVED is 3-for-3 in turf routes, with improving numbers and a forwardly placed style that will keep him out of trouble. Seventh Race (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies) 1. Donna Veloce 2. Wicked Whisper 3. British Idiom DONNA VELOCE would be the first ever to win the BC Juvenile Fillies in just the second start of her career. Her debut sprint romp suggests she is up the challenge, even if she benefitted from a speed-friendly surface. 'VELOCE set fast fractions, won by more than nine, and posted two recent bullet works since raced. Her second dam Cash Run won this race in 1999. From the inside post, 'VELOCE has only one apparent option. That is, race to the lead and try to wire the field. But this race is deep, the top choice must cope with pace rival WICKED WHISPER. The latter won both start by open lengths including a last-out win in the Frizette, a race that produced 12 Juvenile Fillies winners, more than any prep. 'WHISPER has worked regularly over the Santa Anita surface. Kentucky shipper BRITISH IDIOM is a late arrival to California; she scored a sharp G1 route win in just her second start. She has speed, she is versatile, she can finish. The uncertainty for late-arriving shippers is handling a Santa Anita surface that has been deep and slow throughout fall. Locally based BAST will need to run faster than when she won the G1 Chandelier. She was fully extended to win the route in slow time with a modest figure. Her smashing G1 sprint win two back suggested she was any type, but her route was less impressive. K P DREAMIN and PERFECT ALIBI are longshot late threats in a race that could fall apart. This race is a scramble. Eighth Race (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf) 1. Albigna 2. Sharing 3. Daahyeh Based largely on her smart G1 triumph in France last out, Irish import ALBIGNA gets the call to win the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf over Maryland shipper SHARING. Both scored impressive recent wins; ALBIGNA defeated a higher-class field at Longchamp to win clear. Three-for-four this year, she reportedly had an alibi (ovulating) her only loss. Her stable is having a huge season with 2yos. Meanwhile, highly regarded and well-bred SHARING gets tested for class after a sharp victory at Laurel in an ungraded stakes race. Produced by 2010 FM Turf winner Shared Account, 2-for-3 SHARING has tactical speed, she can finish, and is bred to be G1-caliber. English import DAAHYEH finished in front of the top choice two back in a G1 when her rival had an excuse. DAAHYEH arrives following a G2 win at Newmarket. Not sure about the quality of that race, however. It was a blanket finish among the top four. Not knocking her, she fired all five starts: three wins, two seconds. SWEET MELANIA crushed the G2 Jessamine last out by more than five lengths. She wheels back in three weeks, obviously in top form. SELFLESSLY is a Chad Brown-trained winner of the Miss Grillo. That pattern produced four of the 11 winners of this race. Ninth Race (Breeders' Cup Juvenile) 1. Eight Rings 2. Dennis' Moment 3. Shoplifted EIGHT RINGS vs. DENNIS' MOMENT is among the most anticipated showdowns of Breeders' Cup 2019. California-based EIGHT RINGS scored a runaway win last out in a G1 at Santa Anita, Kentucky-based DENNIS' MOMENT scored an impressive victory last out in a G3 at Churchill Downs and posted a big half-mile work after arriving at SA. In a close call, quirky front-runner EIGHT RINGS gets the nod. He set a fast pace (slow surface) winning by six last out, he should make the front. Come and catch him. DENNIS' MOMENT is something special. Maiden winner by 19+ lengths, facile graded winner last out, and well-publicized workout one week ago at Santa Anita. Two good colts, virtual coin flip. SHOPLIFTED has a longshot chance. His first start at SA was a better-than-looked fifth behind the top choice. SHOPLIFTED was caught four-wide early, dropped to last, made an eye-catching move on the far turn, floated wide again into the lane, and split the field. Suspect he is better than that race looks on paper. He will rally late, at a price. Would not leave him out. MAXFIELD scratched. Breeders’ Cup Saturday, Nov. 2, at Santa Anita Fourth Race (Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint) 1. Spiced Perfection 2. Selcourt 3. Covfefe SPICED PERFECTION has plenty in her favor including G1 victory at this 7f specialty distance, sharp current form and an outside post where she can get a good trip in the clear, off the speed. Her comeback in the G2 TCA Stakes at Keeneland was impressive. She stumbled, lost position, yet rallied for the win. Five of the 12 previous winners of BC Filly and Mare Sprint exited the TCA. 'PERFECTION is repeatedly proven at 7f and at SA. Meanwhile, 7f is probably a long way for likely pacesetter SELCOURT, though she has a shot to steal it. Her fast-pace runner-up comeback was solid, she worked well since, and will lead the field into the lane. Front-end upset? COVFEFE is the "fastest" in the field on figures, but the inside post does her no favors. A brilliantly fast 3yo, she also faces a challenging historical hurdle. G1 Test winners are 0-for-8 in the FM Sprint, including four beaten favorites. Only one Test winner hit the board in the FM Sprint. COVFEFE might win anyway, but the early favorite seems an underlay. BELLAFINA is the only entrant going route to sprint. She chased fast fractions and tired in the G1 Cotillion. One turn is ideal, she is 4-for-4 at Santa Anita. COME DANCING is a multiple graded winner making her first start outside New York. LADY NINJA will rally at a price. Fifth Race (Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint) 1. Eddie Haskell 2. Om 3. Shekky Shebaz The 5f specialist EDDIE HASKELL gets the nod in the BC Turf Sprint. He is 9-for-14 at the trip, and could have won his prep except he was shuffled back and lost position leaving the inside post. He ran super, runner-up by a half. The versatile gelding moves to an outside post. Most likely winner with a clean trip. But he is no cinch. OM has an upset look, first start in four months with fast works. His runner-up finish behind outstanding turf sprinter World of Trouble in June at BEL compares favorably to the field. Expect OM to fire first start back. SHEKKY SHEBAZ benefits by the turnback to 5f; he is vastly improved since switching to turf. PURE SENSATION is an 8yo pro with speed and an affinity for this distance, 11-for-19. STUBBINS will rally late; IMPRIMIS has had tough trips lately. Sixth Race (Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile) 1. Improbable 2. Omaha Beach 3. Diamond Oops Habitual slow starter IMPROBABLE faces a tall order against Dirt Mile favorite OMAHA BEACH, who toyed with him in April. But a discrepancy in odds makes the gamble worthwhile. IMPROBABLE broke slowly and raced on a dead rail in his recent Parx debacle, but returned to worked exceptionally well at SA. He has class, G1 winner his third start and two-time runner-up in Kentucky Derby prep stakes prior to a no-excuse fifth as the Derby favorite. He does not always break well, but if he does, he should give the favorite a legitimate battle, if not beat him outright. Of course, OMAHA BEACH might simply be a better horse. 'BEACH scored a sharp comeback victory last out in a G1 sprint, he carried his speed two turns in spring. Sure would have liked to see him in the BC Sprint. The knock on 'BEACH is price. His odds are likely to be short, he might be long gone. DIAMOND OOPS has improved as the year unfolded including a highly rated second in a G1 sprint and a runner-up finish last out in a G1 turf route. He belongs. GIANT EXPECTATIONS might prefer a shorter distance, but he has run a few big routes even if he is 1-for-11 around two turns. Seventh Race (Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf) 1. Sistercharlie 2. Iridessa 3. Vasilika SISTERCHARLIE won the Filly and Mare Turf last year as the favorite, she is favored to become the first to win the race successive years. She has won six straight (all Grade 1s) since summer 2018, she won 10 of 14 overall, over seven different tracks. This is her first start in California. Tough to beat. IRIDESSA is an intriguing alternative at higher odds. A two-time G1 winner in Europe, she can stay the mile and one-quarter trip. VASILIKA returns to SA, where she won her last 10 starts. Her recent third-place prep at KEE was better than it appears, because one mile is shorter than she prefers. She finished with run, and now stretches to 10f. She "wants" to win. BILLESDON BROOK arrives from Europe in top form; she defeated IRIDESSA last out. Trouble-prone FLEETING seeks her first win in more than a year. She kept top company overseas. Eighth Race (Breeders’ Cup Sprint) 1. Mitole 2. Shancelot 3. Matera Sky MITOLE had a fantastic season winning five of six including the prestigious G1 Met mile. He also had a fantastic month since arriving at SA and working super over the surface. He gets the call to win the BC Sprint with a front-running/pace-pressing trip. Consistently among the country's fastest sprinters on figures, familiar with the SA surface, MITOLE the obvious horse to beat. SHANCELOT also is fast, he posted two bullet works following a creditable runner-up finish in his SA debut one month ago. Speed has been good for horses that handle this surface, there is no doubt where SHANCELOT will be positioned. He will be on or near the lead. MATERA SKY looms the upset candidate, based on his runner-up finish in the G1 Golden Shaheen in Dubai in March. He finished a half-length in front of IMPERIAL HINT that day. Although he misfired both starts afterward, one was 7f and the other was turf. Expect a return to form for top Japanese connections. The outside post means a clear trip. CATALINA CRUISER drew the rail, but he probably was going to be outrun early anyway. If the pace gets excessively hot, he could post an off-the-pace upset. Ninth Race (Breeders’ Cup Mile) 1. Circus Maximus 2. Got Stormy 3. Uni CIRCUS MAXIMUS arrives from Europe with G1-winning form (twice) this year and a forward style that suits a field somewhat short on speed. He skipped a start in October due to wet ground, with the BC Mile his autumn objective. Firm ground at SA, the top-class miler is a legit favorite. GOT STORMY, 1:32-and-change G1-winning miler and runner-up last out in the Woodbine Mile, both against boys, has developed into one of this country's top turf milers. Fillies won this race nine times, most recently by Tepin. Like GOT STORMY, she was trained by Mark Casse. 'STORMY has enough tactical speed to be forwardly placed in a race with an apparently soft pace scenario. UNI is the late-runner to fear most. Her closing fractions are ridiculous (:22.52 last out, :22.20 two back, :21.72 before that). She will blast off in the stretch. WITHOUT PAROLE is interesting. His form has been subpar since June 2018, but he now makes his U.S. debut for trainer Chad Brown, who does not waste starts. 'PAROLE was a G1-winning 3yo in Europe, picking an ambitious spot for his comeback. Have to believe he is "live." Tenth Race (Breeders’ Cup Distaff) 1. Paradise Woods 2. Midnight Bisou 3. Ollie's Candy PARADISE WOODS might spring an upset over MIDNIGHT BISOU in the BC Distaff, notwithstanding a disadvantageous inside post and occasional issues breaking from the gate. 'WOODS drew the rail, which means a clean takeoff is absolutely required. She dislikes being inside and behind horses. But if she breaks, and if she avoids a duel with the Kentucky Oaks winner, and if she repeats her impressive last-out G1 victory, 'WOODS can surprise. All five career wins were at SA, she exited her last-out victory in top shape, and will be positioned in front of the favorite. She'll need racing luck (who doesn't?) but if she gets it, the multiple G1 winner should run at least as fast as last time. MIDNIGHT BISOU is 7-for-7 this year, handles any pace scenario, she can extricate herself from trouble with her quick turn of foot, and will be tough to beat. No knock other than short odds for a top filly that trained very well the past month over the SA surface. OLLIE'S CANDY ran better than looked last out in the G1 won by the top choice. 'CANDY was slow from the gate, farther back than expected, made a move into contention, then flattened out. She sharpened her speed in subsequent works, should be closer to the lead under her new rider, and merits an upset chance from just off the pace. SERENGETI EMPRESS, aforementioned Oaks winner, is speed. She misfired last time when unable to get to the front from an inside post, but with an outside post here there is less urgency. She can fall into a trip, setting or pressing while in the clear. STREET BAND and BLUE PRIZE will rally. Eleventh Race (Breeders’ Cup Turf) 1. Bricks and Mortar 2. Anthony Van Dyck 3. Acclimate BRICKS AND MORTAR is 5-for-5 this year (four G1s) at shorter distances; there is precedence for winning the Turf first time at a mile and half (Magician, Johar, Kalanisi). 'MORTAR is working super for Chad Brown and is the standout class of the field. ANTHONY VAN DYCK arrives from Europe with decent form, facing a North American grass division that, except for the favorite, looks modest. ACCLIMATE does not fit on class. But his fast-pace runner-up finish last out was super, he figures to make the lead, and if able to slow it down like the last two times he was ridden by Martin Garcia, he will give longshot bettors a thrill on the front end. OLD PERSIAN won a G1 in March in Dubai, and a G1 in September in Canada. The 9-for-16 world traveler fits perfect. The shippers from New York are too tough to separate. Twelfth Race (Breeders’ Cup Classic) 1. McKinzie 2. Yoshida 3. Higher Power MCKINZIE is expected to use all the speed he has to make the lead, and if he gets comfortable on the front end, he might lead the BC Classic field gate to wire. He is a tepid choice only, with minimal confidence. If a mile and one-quarter is out of reach for MCKINZIE, longshot late-runner YOSHIDA has an upset chance. His best races put him in the hunt, he will roll late at a price. HIGHER POWER stumbled badly at the break in his final prep, and did well to finish third. His dominating win two back in the Pacific Classic, at this distance, is as good as any here have run. ELATE, a mare, is a 10f specialist, facing males for the first time, 10 years after the mare Zenyatta won the 2009 BC Classic. WAR OF WILL adds blinkers and could make things tough for the top choice. Perplexing race.
