Brad Free's Santa Anita horses to watch from week of March 8
SPANISH QUEEN
Trainer: Richard Baltas
Last race: March 5, 5th
Finish: 1st by 5 3/4
Beyer: 74
This 3-year-old filly produced a smashing career debut in a turf route for California-bred fillies and mares. She walked out of the gate, got stopped in traffic on the far turn, lost ground into the lane, and then drew away. This was a super debut by a Tribal Rule filly.
TIZZING
Trainer: Richard Mandella
Last race: March 6, 6th
Finish: 4th by 4
Beyer: 75
A 3-year-old son of Tiznow out of a stakes-producing dam, this colt was merely in for practice in a turf sprint. He was not asked for speed from the gate, dropped back, and raced evenly through the lane. This was a decent prep, likely to improve next out.
SWEET PROMISES
Trainer: Cliff Sise
Last race: March 7, 4th
Finish: 5th by 3
Beyer: 72
A well-bred 3-year-old filly, she showed run in her career debut. Broke slow from the rail, finished evenly, and wants farther than 6 1/2 furlongs. By Bernardini and produced by Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner Life Is Sweet, she is sure to improve next out.
CIRCLING
Trainer: Neil Drysdale
Last race: March 7, 6th
Finish: 3rd by 1/2
Beyer: 77
An import from Ireland, this Galileo filly ran well in a N1X turf route. She broke last, trailed the field, lost considerable ground into the lane, and finished with a rush. This was a sharp comeback, she is a logical contender next out versus similar.
WINNING PRIZE
Trainer: Neil Drysdale
Last race: March 7, 10th
Finish: 5th by 3 3/4
Beyer: 96
A Grade 1 winner, this turf miler was making his comeback after missing a prep race and also missing a workout due to weather. Then, he had trouble. He was blocked in traffic into the lane and ran evenly late. He should move up a ton next time out.
