Brad Free’s horses to watch for Jan. 26
GRANDIOSE TACTICS
Trainer: Ron Ellis
Last race: Jan. 23, 5th
Finish: 3rd by 2 1/2
Beyer: 75
A two-turn specialist making her California debut in a downhill sprint, this older mare finished willingly in a race that was dominated by speed. It was her first start in seven months and a sharp comeback. Expect improvement next time at a longer distance.
HOT MARKET
Trainer: Andy Mathis
Last race: Jan. 24, 3rd
Finish: 3rd by 2 1/2
Beyer: 83
This Cal-bred had a tough go in a N1X turf sprint. He broke slow from post 1, steadied at the three-eighths, and flew late. The lightly raced gelding handles grass and synthetic and figures in a similar statebred allowance, probably at his Golden Gate base.
SAN ONOFRE
Trainer: Karen Headley
Last race: Jan. 24, 8th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 83
Making his first start in 11 months and breaking from the rail in a six-furlong stakes, this good sprinter was under pressure every step by the eventual winner and tired. This was a fine comeback by a horse that should improve next time, second start back.
ERTE
Trainer: Pete Eurton
Last race: Jan. 24, 10th
Finish: 1st by 1/2
Beyer: 45
This filly earned a low number winning a maiden-30, but she overcame an uneasy trip. Not quick breaking from the rail, inside in a tight spot, re-rallied, and inched clear. Assuming realistic placement next time by a top trainer, she merits a closer look, despite her figure.
W. GILES
Trainer: Phil D’Amato
Last race: Jan. 25, 1st
Finish: 3rd by 4
Beyer: 68
A front-running sprinter, this Swiss Yodeler was claimed for $20K by connections that do well first off the claim. He is expected to get a freshening and return for D'Amato in a winning spot.
HONOR SOCIETY
Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer
Last race: Jan. 25, 4th
Finish: 8th by 13 1/2
Beyer: 57
A good-looking 3-year-old by Bernardini, this maiden colt is ready to stretch out. He was merely one-paced in both sprints, while begging for more ground. He’ll get it next time.
