Brad Free's Del Mar play of the day for July 28, 2018
Summer is in full swing, and a pick three Saturday at Del Mar (races 6-8) is the play of the day. It’s a $1 minimum bet; the pick three will "single" a 5-1 shot in race 6, include five runners in race 7, and three runners in race 8. Total cost: $15.
The play:
Race 6
This California-bred allowance/optional-claiming sprint is perfect for Bold Fantasy, first off the claim by trainer Jonathon Wong. According to DRF Formulator, Wong has won with 6 of his last 13 first-off-the-claim starters in Southern California. Bold Fantasy’s speed figures are high enough. So are his odds at a generous 5-1. Bold Fantasy is the "single."
Pick: Bold Fantasy (10)
Race 7
A deep field of Cal-breds races 1 1/16 miles on turf in the $150,000 California Dreamin’ Stakes. Fly to Mars scored a sharp allowance win last out for a hot stable; Well Developed improved with each start; comebacker Pee Wee Reese will set the pace; Grecian Fire and Camino Del Paraiso will rally late in a race that might set up for a late runner. We’ll use those five.
Picks: Grecian Fire (2), Pee Wee Reese (4), Camino Del Paraiso (6), Fly to Mars (7), and Well Developed (9).
Race 8
Claiming fillies and mares sprint six furlongs. Broome meets easier and returns to her preferred sprint distance. Neon Gypsy fits if she handles dirt; Topaz Time figures off her maiden win two starts back.
Picks: Broome (3), Topaz Time (6), and Neon Gypsy (9).
The play: $1 pick three, races 6-8
10 with 2, 4, 6, 7, 9 with 3, 6, 9 = $15.
