Brad Free's Del Mar play of the day for Aug. 4, 2018
A Del Mar daily double is the play of the day for Saturday after a modest play-of-the-day win last week ($63.50 pick-three payoff from a $15 wager). This week’s $2 double includes two runners and four runners; total cost: $16.
Race 7
Maiden 2-year-olds race 5 1/2 furlongs, and first-time starter Sigalert is ready to fire. Purchased for $420,000 at a March 2-year-old sale, Sigalert was sired by Street Sense. He will get speed from his dam.
The dam of Sigalert is debut winner Ouchy Night. As a broodmare, her one foal also won her debut. Sigalert is trained by John Sadler, who won a race each of the past five Del Mar summers with a debuting 2-year-old, with most of those winners at this distance or shorter.
Second-time starter Dark Prince finished fifth in his debut but has trained better since then, according to the Daily Racing Form Del Mar clocker report. We’ll use two.
Picks: Dark Prince (3), Sigalert (6)

Race 8
A deep field of fillies and mares races 1 1/16 miles on turf in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon. In a field with a long list of contenders, we’ll include two longshots and two logical picks.
Midnight Crossing was compromised by the speed-friendly course profile last out; she finished a better-than-it-looked third. She is probably outclassed but is worth a stab at 20-1. Midwest shipper Hallie Belle is 10-1; she defeated multiple Grade 1-placed Hawksmoor two back.
Logical choices are Storm the Hill, who has trained super since a big graded win last out, and Madame Stripes, a graded winner training like she will fire first start back.
Picks: Midnight Crossing (3), Hallie Belle (4), Storm the Hill (6), Madame Stripes (7)
The play: $2 double, races 7-8
3, 6 with 3, 4, 6, 7 = $16
