Del Mar

Brad Free's Del Mar horses to watch from week of July 10-12, 2020

Brad Free|Jul 15, 2020

SECRET TOUCH
Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Last race: July 10, 1st
Finish: 1st by neck
Beyer: 84
Veteran gelding overcame slow start to win for fifth time at Del Mar. Claimed for $16K by O’Neill from Peter Eurton, horse for course fits any claiming level from $20K to $40K.

RONAMO
Trainer: Phil D’Amato
Last race: July 10, 5th
Finish: 2nd by 3/4
Beyer: 82
Kentucky shipper moved too soon in dirt route, opened up, collared, finished five lengths clear of third. With patient handling, should be tough in next starter-allowance route.

TAMING THE TIGRESS
Trainer: Peter Miller
Last race: July 10, 6th
Finish: 4th by 1 3/4
Beyer: 40
Juvenile filly was favored first time out from rail, but everything went wrong. Stumbled, in traffic, uncomfortable, sputtered. Smiling Tiger filly is better than this race suggests.

LIGHTNING FAST
Trainer: Bill Spawr
Last race: July 10, 8th
Finish: 7th by 6
Beyer: 73
Comebacker raced above his eligibility in entry-level allowance that was only a prep. Lagged, wide, evenly. Will be fitter when he drops into California-bred allowance next out.

PSYCHO DAR
Trainer: Steve Miyadi
Last race: July 11, 6th
Finish: 4th by 4 1/2
Beyer: 84
Del Mar specialist had a tough trip in turf sprint. Settled off pace, blocked turn and into lane, never had a clear run, could have finished second. Follow in similar N1X turf sprint.

KIWI’S DREAM
Trainer: Victor Trujillo
Last race: July 11, 8th
Finish: 2nd by neck
Beyer: 96
Golden Gate shipper set blazing pace (45.08 and 1:08.99) in turf mile, fought back, worn down. Much improved around two turns, the one to catch next out, Grade 2 Del Mar Mile?

SUPER PATRIOT
Trainer: Richard Baltas
Last race: July 12, 6th
Finish: 2nd by 1
Beyer: 88
Veteran ran better than the winner in turf mile stakes. Trailed while eventual winner slowed pace to crawl, wide into lane, smoked home shade over 22 seconds. She was best.
