Brad Free's cross-country plays for Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Brad Free|May 06, 2020

The possible reopening of California means Santa Anita could be racing next weekend. We’ll see. Meantime, fiscally responsible pick threes Wednesday at Will Rogers Downs and Tampa Bay Downs look interesting, as does a win bet on a horse we tried last month.

Will Rogers Downs pick three races 3-5 (3:15 p.m. ET) – A small $12 play will try to establish value early by including only two in the opening leg, leaving off the program favorite.

Race 3 – The One for Fun (1) followed her maiden romp with a better-than-looked fourth in her first against winners. She was wide throughout, but finished with interest. The One for Fun is listed at a tempting 6-1; the ticket also will use Tickle Bunny (5), closing second last out in a claiming race last won by the pacesetter. Two-deep: 1, 5

Race 4 – Half the field in this claiming sprint is included: Recorder (1) is sharp, up in class off a win; Young Hendrick (2) wheels back six days after a runner-up finish at Oaklawn Park; Jazz Music (6) bombed last out, but fits off a win two back; Nacogdoches (8) switches from a 9 pecent rider to a 26 percent rider. Four-deep: 1, 2, 6, 8

Race 5 – A restricted claiming route includes two favorites and a price. Decorated for Gold (5) drops; Special Conquest (9) is a habitual runner-up but first-time Will Rogers at 8-1; Spectacular Temper (10) is favored off a big maiden win. Three-deep: 5, 9, 10.

Races 3-5 pick three (50-cent minimum): 1, 5 with 1, 2, 6, 8 with 5, 9, 10 = $12

Tampa Bay Downs pick three races 6-8 (3:30 p.m. ET) – A small $12 play includes prices in all three legs.

Race 6 – Cpl. Dionicio (4), the program favorite, is up in class off a big win; Fledermaus (6) defeated the favorite two back; What a Hoot (10) faces an easier N3L claiming field than he met last time when he finished third. Three-deep: 4, 6, 10

Race 7 – Masterio (4) is a maiden facing winners, but his runner-up finish two back actually puts him in the hunt at 6-1; Dynaform (6) defeated similar claiming 3-year-olds last out and enters as a legitimate favorite. Two-deep: 4, 6

Race 8 – Food and Wine (2), first-time gelding and sibling to stakes winner Summering (2) stretches out for his comeback; Fit for a King (6) ran well in his fourth-place debut and should improve; favorite U S Army Corps (8) missed by a head last out; also-eligible Juror (11) is a Tapit firster from a barn that does well with these. Four-deep: 2, 6, 8, 11.

Races 6-8 pick three (50-cent minimum): 4, 6, 10 with 4, 6, with 2, 6, 8, 11 = $12

Will Rogers Downs Race 10 (6:45 p.m. ET) – Aloo Ghost was a play last month at 7-2; he finished second after blowing his chance by breaking slowly. Reluctant to chase a losing bet, but Aloo Ghost might have been best. He is 4-1, returning at the same level. Winner if he breaks?
