Brad Free's cross-country plays for Sunday, May 3, 2020
Arkansas is in the rear-view mirror; all eyes Sunday are on Florida. The action at Tampa Bay Downs and Gulfstream Park looks interesting. Jumping in:
Tampa Bay Downs double races 1-2 (12:40 p.m. ET) – The first two program favorites are blah. Absalom (11) lacks a finish and faces pace pressure. In the second race, Tithed (5) is a maiden-claiming sprinter with no speed. Those are fun to bet against. Sometimes, they beat you. Other times, you play a $1 double three-by-three.
Race 1 – Chief of Joy (6) and I Aint Tellin (7) were compromised by slow fractions last out; No Regrets (8) is a habitual runner-up, but he finished in a quick 23.34 seconds last time. Three-deep: 6, 7, 8
Race 2 – Magical Illusion (2) drops in class and adds blinkers for his second career start; Golden V C (6) also drops and has speed; Large (8) has decent enough figures and adds Lasix for a stable that is 0 for 68 since November 2017. Three-deep: 2, 6, 8.
Races 1-2 double: 6, 7, 8 with 2, 6, 8 = $9.

Tampa Bay Downs race 3 (1:42 p.m. ET) – A longshot pedigree play that is conspicuously obvious, Glacier Park (4) drops in class for a new trainer and switches to turf. Glacier Park was produced by multiple graded turf winner Snow Top Mountain. Glacier Park might be a bust, but at 10-1 he is worth a longshot look. Turf only.
Gulfstream Park race 4 (2:15 p.m. ET) – Not sure if Battle Rags (7) really wants dirt after watching his wide-trip third-place debut on video, but at 15-1 in the program, cannot get too picky. Second-start maidens sometimes slip through the cracks. Price play.
Gulfstream Park race 5 (2:46 p.m. ET) – Reasons to wager on Conquer (3) at 6-1 include a drop in class and TimeformUS pace figures in route races that suggest this five-furlong trip is in his wheelhouse. Turf only.
Gulfstream Park race 7 (3:38 p.m. ET) – The morning line seems out of whack. Doubt there will be a major discrepancy between 8-5 program favorite Token (2) and habitual bridesmaid Estilo Talentoso (3), listed at 4-1. With blinkers on, Estilo Talentoso could be gone.
Tampa Bay Downs race 7 (3:42 p.m. ET) – The outside post is problematic for Windfall Profit (12), but based on her wide-trip runner-up comeback, it will be surprising if she loses this maiden special weight. She is listed at 3-1. That is good enough, if this race stays on turf.
