Brad Free: Santa Anita horses to watch for week of Jan. 29, 2023

Brad Free|Jan 30, 2024

PRINCIP
Trainer: Mark Glatt
Last race: Jan. 26, 5th
Finish: 1st by 3 1/4
Beyer: 81
Hammered to even money in $20k claiming N3L sprint, front-runner smoked his rivals gate to wire. Effort was better than the figure. He can repeat in unrestricted claiming sprint.

MYSTIC FLYER
Trainer: Michael McCarthy
Last race: Jan. 26, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 2 1/4
Beyer: 86
Pace-pressing gelding affirmed preference for dirt route with solid effort behind odds-on winner while reproducing his last-out victory. ’Flyer would fit in Cal-bred allowance, dirt route only.

DORIE MILLER
Trainer: Jorge Periban
Last race: Jan. 27, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 2
Beyer: 59
Come-from-behind filly had to wait behind runners on the turn, split rivals into the lane and finished okay on speed-favoring track. Timely $32k claim by Periban from Steve Miyadi.

CURLIN’S KAOS
Trainer: Antonio Garcia
Last race: Jan. 27, 5th
Finish: 1st by 2
Beyer: 71
Front-runner changed strategy, took back, uncorked wide move, big finish in impressive turf-mile maiden win. Cal-bred gelding by Clubhouse Ride from Curlin mare has figured it out.

FLYING DRUMMER
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Jan. 27, 6th
Finish: 1st by 3 1/2
Beyer: 94
First-time gelding returned from seven-month layoff with decisive victory in N1X dirt route, albeit bias-aided. Set pace inside, easy tempo, kicked away. Five-year-old can go up the ladder.

MR FISK
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Jan. 27, 8th
Finish: 5th by 5 1/4
Beyer: 90
Wide trip and closing style on pro-speed track sealed his fate in Grade 2; he basically ran in place. Looms upsetter March 2 in Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap, a race that could come up light.

MUCHO DEL ORO
Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Last race: Jan. 28, 7th
Finish: 2nd by nose
Beyer: 97
Off more than seven months, turf sprinter ran super in restricted stakes on hillside course. Pressed blazing pace, opened up in lane, collared by deep closer. Excellent comeback.
