Brad Free: Los Alamitos horses to watch for week of Dec. 16, 2024

Brad Free|Dec 17, 2024

OVETA’S HOBBY
Trainer: John Sadler
Last race: Dec. 8, 7th
Finish: 1st by 12
Beyer: 77
Class-drop juvenile filly trounced $50,000 maiden-claiming sprint. Broke well, sped to lead, widened late, would be a top contender in nonwinners-of-two starter allowance.

DEVIL AMONG US
Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Last race: Dec. 8, 8th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 86
Cal-bred allowance sprinter dueled on fast fractions, put away pace rivals, collared by late-running winner. Sharp effort by gelding, could be long gone vs. similar next out.

NEW KING
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Dec. 8, 3rd
Finish: 1st by 1 1/4
Beyer: 94
Comeback 3-year-old was wide early in maiden mile, tucked inside, cut corner far turn, inched to lead, fastest mile of meet (1:36.57). Into Mischief colt has bright future.

TAIF
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Dec. 8, 3rd
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/4
Beyer: 92
Debut 3-year-old colt by Arrogate set pace in dirt mile, raced greenly in stretch, finished five lengths clear of third. Potential standout next maiden route on dirt.

GRATEFUL MY LOVE
Trainer: Michael McCarthy
Last race: Dec. 8, 9th
Finish: 4th by 2 3/4
Beyer: 60
Tough trip for favorite in Cal-bred juvenile filly stakes. Shuffled to last, raced at back, unable to establish position, sputtered. Will be tough vs. Cal-bred maidens next out.

GLASS OF JAMESON
Trainer: Peter Eurton
Last race: Dec. 14, 7th
Finish: 7th by 7 3/4
Beyer: 41
Debut juvenile filly misfired as favorite. Broke last, wide, dull. Toss this, she trained very well at Santa Anita and is likely to improve over her home track next out.

CALL ME SIR
Trainer: Mark Glatt
Last race: Dec. 15, 9th
Finish: 7th by 6
Beyer: 67
Juvenile turf specialist was wide start to finish in Cal-bred dirt route stakes. Inconclusive effort as first-time gelding. He may have more ability than shown, might want turf.
