PROFILEBy Ron Gierkink STRENGTHSVersatility is among his assets. He has run well over several dirt surfaces, and was competitive in both of his races on Woodbine's Polytrack, which included a wide fourth after breaking from post 16 in the prestigious Queen's Plate under 126 pounds. The sharp rival who nosed him out of the top spot in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie, Pender Harbour, came back to take the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Breeders' Stakes. He has been based at the Spa since early May with a top trainer, who has had a highly successful Saratoga meet. A son of popular sire Giant's Causeway, Bowman's Causeway is out of a Grade 1 winner on dirt, and there's ample stamina in his pedigree. WEAKNESSESHe wasn't a factor in his two starts in graded stakes company, the Grade 1 Florida Derby and the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, which were both at Gulfstream. His good performances at Woodbine and Fort Erie came against a solid but unspectacular group of Canadian-breds. He has shipped back and forth across the border several times since early June, which can take a toll on some horses when the weather is hot. VALUEAgainst perhaps the toughest group he has yet to face, he figures to be among the longest shots in the wagering. Don't give him a second look unless you get at least 30-1. |
