Grade 1 winner Bottle of Rouge picked up 20 points for the Kentucky Oaks on Sunday when she held off a closing Touch Magic to win her 3-year-old debut in the $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third to Pashmina. The one-mile race was one of six stakes on a card featuring the $500,000 Sunland Park Derby won by Pavlovian. Bottle of Rouge ($2.80) gave trainer Bob Baffert his record ninth win in the Sunland Park Oaks. She stalked the pace in third as Cashed set fractions of 23.85 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.80 for the half-mile and 1:10.56 for six furlongs while pushed along by Coffee Connection. Bottle of Rouge moved closer on the final turn, took the lead into the stretch, drifted briefly in the lane, and went on to cover the distance on a fast track 1:35.82. Following the race, there was a lengthy stewards’ inquiry into the stretch drive, as well as a jockey objection by the rider of Pashmina against the winner. Bottle of Rouge was making her first start since finishing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Oct. 31 at Del Mar. Prior to the race, she had won the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. Juan Hernandez was aboard Bottle of Rouge, who races for Jill Baffert. Bottle of Rouge is a daughter of Vino Rosso who has now won 3 of 5 starts for earnings of $427,000. The Sunland Park Oaks offered its first five finishers points on a scale of 20-10-6-4-2. Coffee Connection held fourth and Not a Lady finished fifth Sunday. Baffert’s nine winners in the Sunland Park Oaks include Plum Pretty, who went on to win the Kentucky Oaks in 2011. Harry Henson Aye Candy, a half-sister to $12 million earner Senor Buscador, kept a hard-charging Corrina Corrina at bay for a 2 1/2-length win in the $100,000 Harry Henson. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third to Practical Dream. The Harry Henson was a mile race for fillies and mares. Aye Candy ($9.40) stalked the pace in fourth, overtook leader Wild Bout Hilary after six furlongs in 1:10.66, and went on to cover the distance in 1:36.48. Christian Ramos was aboard for trainer Todd Fincher. Aye Candy is a daughter of Candy Ride who races for her breeder, Peacock Family Racing Stable. Fincher and Ramos had another stakes win on the card with Buy Local ($14.60), who darted to a three-length victory over Speed Merchant in the $100,000 Red Hedeman Mile. The winner of the race for 3-year-olds bred in New Mexico covered the distance in 1:38.32. Buy Local is a son of Sporting Chance who races for J. Kirk and Judy Robison. Bill Thomas Memorial Trainer Justin Evans accounted for the exacta in the $100,000 Bill Thomas Memorial when Clovisconnection won the race by a length over Neiman. It was another length back in third to Ryvit. Clovisconnection ($9.40) entered off a fourth-place finish in The Chosen Vron Stakes on Nov. 8 at Del Mar. He sat just off the pace Sunday and went on to cover 6 1/2 furlongs in a sharp 1:14.91. Luis Negron was aboard for William Hedrick. Clovisconnection is a son of Vronsky. *** Marka ($25.40) was a 4 1/4-length winner over Unwound in the $100,000 Peppers Pride. She covered the mile for 3-year-old fillies bred in New Mexico in 1:38.72. Cristian Torres was aboard the daughter of Marking for Fincher.
