ARCADIA, Calif. - Boss Sully continues to thrive after layoffs. On Sunday at Santa Anita, Boss Sully led throughout the $102,500 Siren Lure Stakes at six furlongs on turf, his first start since August. On three other occasions since August 2024, Boss Sully has returned from layoffs ranging from slightly less than three months to more than nine months and won. Boss Sully ($8.20) won the first stakes of his career in the Siren Lure Stakes. His three preceding wins following layoffs were in allowance races. Favored in a field of 10 in the Siren Lure, Boss Sully led by a half-length over 25-1 Vlahos after a quarter-mile in 22.06 seconds. He expanded his advantage to 2 1/2 lengths after a half-mile in 44.92 seconds. Boss Sully was strong in the final furlong, winning by 1 1/2 lengths over 7-2 Unconquerable Keen, who closed from sixth. Artislas (14-1) rallied from ninth to finish third, beaten 2 3/4 lengths. Boss Sully was ridden for the first time by Joel Rosario, who began riding in California on a full-time basis on Sunday. Rosario previously rode in Kentucky. Rosario said he sensed rivals getting closer in the stretch, but that Boss Sully had sufficient momentum. “I could feel I still had some horse,” he said. Boss Sully was timed in 1:08.42 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 94. Sorrento Sky finished fourth, followed bv Virat, Zio Jo, Charge for Gold, Friendly Confines, Bartholdy and Vlahos. Boss Sully’s stretch run left trainer Brian Koriner impressed. “I had worries when they came to the top of the lane so quick,” he said. “He kicked on and I said, ‘Well, that is a good horse.’” Boss Sully, a 6-year-old California-bred gelding by Street Boss, races for Rusty Brown, Alan Klein and Phil Lebherz. Boss Sully has won 6 of 17 starts and earned $469,392. The Siren Lure Stakes was Boss Sully’s seventh appearance in a stakes.
