Boss Ego wins San Carlos by head

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Favored Boss Ego ($5) held off the late charge of comebacking Out Of Mind to win the $57,038 San Carlos Handicap by a head Sunday.

Boss Ego sat a bit wide in third place through the first six furlongs of the one-mile race, tracking pacesetting I'madrifter. He drew clear inside the final furlong, then held off Out Of Mind, who had only run once, in the Bel Air Handicap (G2) last July 7, since 2000.

Boss Ego earned $31,050 to improve his lifetime earnings to $269,760 with seven wins in 27 starts.

"He's pretty tough. He dug in all the way down the lane, but (Out Of Mind) ran a real good race and probably needed the out," winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said.
