Borel hits 4,500 with 18-1 shot

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jockey Calvin Borel reached a milestone while capping a memorable Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs by riding Screen Your Friend to an upset in the Grade 3, $164,550 Bashford Manor Stakes.

With his victory aboard 18-1 Screen Your Friend, Borel became the 34th jockey in North American racing history to win 4,500 races while capping a four-win day on the second-to-last program of the 52-day Churchill spring meet.

"It feels so good," said Borel, whose high point in a 26-year riding career came last year when he won the Kentucky Derby aboard Street Sense. "This is all I've wanted to do my whole life."

Owned by Bill Carl and trained by Bernie Flint, Screen Your Friend ($38) went straight to the lead after breaking fastest of all from the inside post in the six-furlong Bashford Manor. After Silver Bayer, then General Quarters, tired from chasing him, Screen Your Friend suddenly found himself well clear on the lead. Borel stayed with a persistent right-handed whip to help Screen Your Friend prevail by 1 1/4 lengths over Lyin' Heart.

Screen Your Friend ran the distance in 1:10.84 over a fast track.

Segal, the uncoupled Steve Asmussen-trained stablemate of Lyin' Heart, was third, another 4 1/4 lengths back. Theregoesjojo finished fourth as the 7-5 favorite.

Chicago invader My Dominick James was scratched to run instead in the Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows, leaving a field of seven 2-year-olds.

Screen Your Friend, a homebred colt by Friends Lake, earned $99,981. He was coming off a maiden victory at Churchill.

Flint, recovering from back surgery at his Louisville home, was not on hand.

* Change Up ($11.20), a graded stakes winner on dirt, rallied to win her turf debut in an optional claiming sprint for fillies and mares.
