Booklet leads all the way for In Reality victory

Mike Welsch|Oct 15, 2001

MIAMI - Booklet dominated the In Reality, the final leg of the open division of the Florida Stallion Series, with a 4 1/4-length victory over Rulebook and 12 other 2-year-old colts and geldings at Calder on Saturday.

Carey's Gold finished third in his quest to become only the sixth horse to sweep the Stallion Series.

Booklet ($3.80) led throughout under Eibar Coa and drew away with authority. He was the third offspring of the stallion Notebook to win a stakes on the $1.5 million Festival of the Sun program, along with Coolbythepool (Shocker T. Handicap) and Fappie's Notebook (Smile Sprint). Booklet is not Breeders' Cup-eligible, and his trainer, Steve Klesaris, said he would not be supplemented to the Juvenile.

* Blissful Kiss rallied from just off the pace to a three-length victory over Ms Brookski in the $400,000 My Dear Girl Stakes, final leg of the filly division of the Stallion Series.

Trained by Bill White, Blissful Kiss paid $46 after covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:46.08 under jockey Cornelio Velasquez.

* Best of the Rest won the $100,000 Spend a Buck Handicap by 2 3/4 lengths over Dancing Guy. Three-time Grade 1 winner Sir Bear, the 8-5 favorite, finished third.

Best of the Rest's final time of 1:42.59 for the 1 1/16 miles of the Spend a Buck was just .04 seconds off the track record, set by Castlebrook three weeks earlier. Trained by Eddie Plesa Jr., he paid $6.60 as the second choice.

* Plesa was back in the winner's circle two hours later after Sara's Success ($10.80) ran down longshot Grey Ballet to capture the $200,000 Calder Oaks by a half-length under Velazquez. Sara's Success raced well-placed, then eased out from the rail and overtook Grey Ballet in deep stretch. Grey Ballet slipped through along the hedge and took a clear lead in early stretch. Sheppard's Watch, the 9-5 favorite, ran third.

* Fappie's Notebook ($5.80) did not have a horse beaten leaving the backstretch in the $200,000 Smile Sprint Handicap, but he circled the field into the stretch and ran down Thrillin Discovery to post a half-length victory in the six-furlong dash. Bet Me Best, the 7-5 favorite, stopped badly after pressing the pace and was being eased at the finish.

* Trainer Marty Wolfson dominated the early portion of the Festival of the Sun program, winning the $100,000 Flying Pidgeon Handicap with Mr. Pleasentfer ($12.40) and the $100,000 Shocker T. Handicap with Coolbythepool ($5.20).
