Bomb threat grounds riders

Marty McGee|Apr 17, 2004

A bomb scare that closed a terminal at Los Angeles International Airport for about two hours Friday night prevented jockeys Mike Smith and Corey Nakatani from taking a red-eye flight to Lexington, Ky., to ride in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday.

Smith was replaced aboard Pomeroy in the Lexington by Brice Blanc, while Rafael Bejarano got the mount on Boomzeeboom from Nakatani.

Smith said by phone Saturday that he and Nakatani initially went to the wrong terminal, and by the time they were directed to the right one, they were not permitted to get to their Delta Airlines flight because of the bomb scare. The flight eventually left without them, and they were unable to get another flight that would get them to Lexington in due time.
