Bomb Cyclone explodes from post 1 to win Los Alamitos Super Derby
The inside post at Los Alamitos has made the 3-year-old Quarter Horse Bomb Cyclone a millionaire.
Bomb Cyclone won the $2.03 million Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last December from post 1. He had the same draw and same result in Sunday’s $982,050 Los Alamitos Super Derby.
Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio, Bomb Cyclone ($3.40) broke sharply and led throughout the 400 yards, winning by a commanding 1 1/2 lengths over 9-1 Scoops Dynasty. Golden Boi, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2021, finished third, while A Pollitical Candy V, the winner of the Rainbow and All American derbies at Ruidoso Downs in the summer, could only finish fourth in a field of 10.
Bomb Cyclone was timed in 19.30 seconds, the fastest time in the track’s richest race for 3-year-olds since Apollitical Jess won in 19.13 seconds in 2010.

The win gave Bomb Cyclone a presumptive berth to the $750,000 Champion of Champions at 440 yards at Los Alamitos on Dec. 10. The track has not released full invitations to the Champion of Champions.
Owned by Connie Rosenthal and trained by Chris O’Dell, Bomb Cyclone earned $399,021 for the Super Derby win. A winner of 6 of 9 starts, Bomb Cyclone has earned $1,326,791. He was purchased for $215,000 as a yearling in Ruidoso in 2020.
Bomb Cyclone has won 3 of 4 starts this year. He was fourth by two lengths in the All American Derby on Sept. 4 as the even-money favorite. O’Dell said Bomb Cyclone was cast in his stall several days before the race, but was pronounced fit to run.
After that loss, Bomb Cyclone did not race again until the time trials for the Super Derby on Oct. 16 when he set the fastest qualifying time of 19.36 seconds.
