Bolo will miss La Jolla Handicap

DEL MAR, Calif. – Bolo, the turf stakes winner who was third in the Santa Anita Derby this year, has been turned out for 60 days and will miss an expected start in Sunday’s $150,000 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar.
Trainer Carla Gaines said on Wednesday that Bolo will be pointed for the marathon Santa Anita winter-spring meeting, and that the colt has not sustained an injury that will require surgery.
“I think I’ll turn him out for 60 days,” Gaines said. “I’ll let him down a bit.”
Bolo was the 123-pound highweight for the Grade 3 La Jolla for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on turf. His absence leaves Papacoolpapacool and Prospect Park as the joint 121-pound highweights in a field expected to include Cross the Line, Hero Ten All, Om, Pain and Misery, and Royal Albert Hall.
Papacoolpapacool was fifth as the 6-5 favorite in the Oceanside Stakes here on the July 16 opening-day program, racing wide on the turn and finishing four lengths behind Soul Driver in the one-mile turf race.
Soul Driver will be pointed for the $250,000 Del Mar Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf Sept. 6, trainer Jeff Mullins said Wednesday. Soul Driver was not nominated for the La Jolla.
