Bolo a late scratch from Breeders' Cup Mile

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bolo was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Mile about 10:30 a.m. Pacific on Saturday morning because of an illness, trainer Carla Gaines said.
Gaines, via text message, said bloodwork done on Bolo indicated the horse had some sort of infection. Gaines said Bolo “had mucus and coughing” and that the decision to scratch was difficult but that Bolo’s camp was “doing what is best for the horse.”
Suedois was scratched from the Mile earlier Saturday morning, allowing Next Shares to draw into the race. The Mile’s other also-eligible horse, Caribou Club, never shipped into Santa Anita, according to a Breeders’ Cup official. Bolo’s scratch was announced a couple hours after other Breeders’ Cup scratches and came just before the second race on the card.
Bolo qualified for the Mile by winning the Shoemaker Mile this past spring, a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In race. He would’ve been a long price in today’s Mile but did bring an element of early speed to a race lacking pace and might well have led.
