Bold Roberta faces bold challengers

DRF Staff|Nov 14, 2001

Bold Roberta, a game winner in a similar spot last out at Santa Anita, heads a field of 10 older fillies and mares in Friday's featured seventh race, a six-furlong, $32,000 allowance.

Bold Roberta's Santa Anita win was her first of the 2001 season. She sped the six furlongs in 1:09.80 to defeat Our Here Tiz by one length. The 3-year-old Bold Roberta, trained by Carmela Anderson, also raced well in her previous effort at Santa Anita, finishing third beaten just two lengths.

Emerald Pendant should provide strong competition. Claimed by Jerry Hollendorfer at Fairplex in September for $25,000, Emerald Pendant came right back in an allowance race on Oct. 19 at Bay Meadows and closed from sixth to be second behind Heaven Came Down. She has two victories this year and appears to be in top form with a strong workout on Nov. 7.

Kona Queen, a recent claim at Santa Anita, should also draw support. Kona Queen was claimed by trainer Peter Eurton for $40,000 on Oct. 25. She won that claiming race, her third win of the season in only six starts.

Power to Burn and Adorable Lydia are also capable of springing an upset Friday. Power to Burn is looking for her first win of the year, but has made only four starts and seemed to be improving in her last two. Trained by Howard Belvoir, she finished a strong second behind Most of All in a six-furlong allowance race on Oct. 5 at Bay Meadows and last out she finished fourth behind Adorable One, also at Bay Meadows.

Adorable Lydia won her only start impressively at Bay Meadows on Nov. 2. A chestnut daughter of Carson City, Adorable Lydia was sent off as the favorite in that $25,000 maiden claiming race off some fast morning workouts. She justified that optimism with a two-length victory under Joey Castro. Castro will again be aboard for Friday's feature.
