Boisterous, Unusual Heatwave to stand at Tommy Town

Michael Amoruso Boisterous, who won the Man o’ War in July, worked a half-mile in 48.12 seconds on Monday morning over the outer turf course.

The stakes winners Boisterous and Unusual Heatwave will begin stallion careers at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez, Calif., in 2015, farm manager Mike Allen said on Thursday.

Boisterous, a 7-year-old horse by Distorted Humor, retired earlier this month after winning 12 of 35 starts and earning $1,458,792. He will stand for $5,000.

Boisterous originally raced for Phipps Racing before being purchased by Gary Barber out of last year's Keeneland November sale and transferred to trainer Todd Pletcher. The horse won eight stakes, including the Grade 1 Man O’ War Stakes on turf at Belmont Park in July, 2013.

Earlier this year, Boisterous was third in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs.

“He flew in here a couple of days ago,” Allen said. “He’s a good-looking horse, about 16.2 (hands), a real nice body.”

Allen said that Barber and farm owner Tom Stull plan to support Boisterous with their own mares.

“They want to make sure he has a chance to make it,” Stull said.

Boisterious is out of the stakes winner Emanating, a stakes-winning Cox’s Ridge mare who earned $273,030. Emanating is a half-sister to Gold Fever, the winner of the seven races including the Grade 1 NYRA Mile at Aqueduct in 1996.

Unusual Heatwave was retired earlier this year after winning 4 of 20 starts and earnings $488,752. Unusual Heatwave will stand for $2,500, Allen said.

Trained by Alexis Barba for Teresa McWilliams, Unusual Heatwave was a three-time stakes winner against California-breds – the 2012 Snow Chief Stakes and Real Good Deal Stakes and the Crystal Water Stakes earlier this year.

Unusual Heatwave won at distances ranging from about 6 1-2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in a maiden race to 1 1-8 miles in the Snow Chief Stakes.

Unusual Heatwave, 5, is by top California stallion Unusual Heat and is out of Miss Alphie, by Candi’s Gold. Unusual Heatwave is a half-brother to Alphie’s Bet, the winner of the 2010 Snow Chief Stakes.

Boisterous and Unusual Heatwave join Grazen, Kafwain, Ministers Wild Cat, and Old Topper on the 2015 Tommy Town stallion roster.
