Bluegrass Cat to Ballena Vista Farm in California

DRF Breeding Staff|Oct 09, 2014

Grade 1 winner Bluegrass Cat will relocate to Donald and Karen Cohn’s Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona, Calif., for the 2015 breeding season, where he will stand for an advertised fee of $6,500.

The 11-year-old son of Storm Cat previously stood at Rockridge Stud in New York after beginning his stallion career at WinStar Farm in Kentucky. He is the current leader on New York’s general sire list for 2014 with $4,059,358 in progeny earnings. He was also New York’s leading general sire in 2013.

Bluegrass Cat will complete his Southern Hemisphere breeding season at Haras Lacala in Uruguay, and will be available for inspection at Ballena Vista Farm later this year.

Bluegrass Cat has sired five crops of racing age, with 262 winners and over $20.3 million in combined progeny earnings. His runners are led by Grade 2 winners Kathmanblu and Teeth of the Dog, as well as Grade 3 winners Sabercat, Go Blue or Go Home, and Blue Laser.

Homebred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Bluegrass Cat won 5 of 11 career starts for earnings of $1,761,280, highlighted by wins in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes, the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes, and the Grade 3 Nashua Stakes. He also finished second in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes.

Bluegrass Cat is out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare She’s a Winner, who is the dam of seven winners from eight starters, also including Grade 2 winner Lord of the Game, stakes winner Sonoma Cat, and Grade 2-placed Cal Nation.

His second dam is the Grade 2 winner Get Lucky, a full sister to champion Rhythm and prominent regional sire Not For Love. That mare is the pivot point for a prolific family of runners that includes Kentucky Derby winner and current leading freshman sire Super Saver, Grade 1 winners Imagining and Girolamo, Grade 2 winner Daydreaming, and Grade 3 winners Accelerator and Brethren.
