Blue hen Tizso, 25, changes hands at Keeneland January
Blue hen Tizso, a full sister to Hall of Famer Tiznow, was a $62,000 purchase by Crawford Farms out of last week's Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. The 25-year-old is currently in foal to Frosted, and her new connections have said she will be pensioned to enjoy her twilight years at leisure after the expected delivery in late February.
Crawford Farms, in Durhamville, N.Y., is owned and operated by Michelle and Al Crawford. The Crawfords are best known as Standardbred owners and breeders; they own about 100 Standardbred broodmares, and just a handful of Thoroughbred mares. However, they have been successful in the latter arena, currently campaigning graded stakes winner Shancelot.
"She's home for life," Michelle Crawford said. "Safe, sound, and happy."
Tizso is best known as the dam of millionaire Paynter, who finished second in the 2012 Belmont Stakes before winning the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. He returned from a serious illness to be Grade 1-placed as an older horse. Tizso has also produced Grade 3 winner Tiz West, stakes winner Tizakitty, and stakes-placed Tizalovelylady. Her daughter Tizprecious produced stakes winner Tizgianni, while another daughter, Tizsotrue produced two stakes-placed runners.
Tizso was purchased in 2002 by Diamond A Farm, which is in the process of selling off its mares. She was offered at Keeneland January by Taylor Made Sales Agency, as agent.
"She’s lovely and looks great," Mark Taylor said. "Diamond A Farm has cared for her meticulously for years. ... We [were] in contact with numerous buyers who wish to take her home and make this her last foal before retirement."
California-bred Tizso, by Cee's Tizzy and out of Cee's Song, is a full sister to 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow, the only horse to win two editions of the Breeders' Cup Classic. They are also full siblings to multiple graded stakes winner Budroyale, who earned more than $2.8 million; to graded stakes winner Tizdubai and stakes winner Tizbud; and to Tizamazing, the dam of 2013 Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow.
