Blood Money stands out in Berwick Futurity
The $826,620 Lee Berwick Futurity for Quarter Horses on Saturday at Delta Downs will be a race for second if Blood Money runs back to his dominant trial win. He rolled by more than four lengths while setting the fastest qualifying time for the stakes, which anchors Louisiana Showcase Day.
The Lee Berwick is richest of seven Louisiana-bred stakes on the card, which features total purses of $1.4 million. The program closes Delta’s meet for Quarter Horses. First post is 3 p.m. Central.
Blood Money is unbeaten in three career starts, with all of his races coming at Delta. He launched his career in a May 22 trial for the $346,000 Louisiana Laddie and won the finale on June 12. Blood Money then won his July 10 trial for the Lee Berwick.
Blood Money darted to a 4 1/2-length win, and his time of 17.24 seconds for 350 yards was the fastest after two days of trials for the Lee Berwick. Everardo Rodriguez has the mount for Rojas Racing Stables and trainer Rosendo Valdez Jr.
Others set to start include Sheza Fast Blood and Railroad Jimmy, both on three-race win streaks, and Quid Pro Quo, who is 3 for 3.
The $203,122 Delta Downs Louisiana-bred Derby brings together three horses riding significant win streaks. Supa Five Bar and multiple stakes winner Apollitical High have each won their last four starts, while Black Blood has won his last three and is 7 for 9 overall.
Lifeinthefastlanes will attempt to improve her career record to 10 for 14 when she takes on multiple Grade 2 winner Apollitical B Snow in the $75,000 Louisiana Classic.
Thoroughbred racing returns to Delta on Oct. 13.
