Blinkers might have helped New Year's Eve raise her game in Edgewood win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 3-year-old filly New Year’s Eve came out of her impressive Friday win in the Edgewood Stakes in good shape, trainer Brendan Walsh said Saturday, but no plans have been made for the filly’s next start.
New Year’s Eve, rallying strongly from the back of the Edgewood field, ran 1 1/16 miles over firm turf in 1:43.35, good for a 90 Beyer Speed Figure. No 3-year-old filly has earned a higher Beyer Figure on turf this year, though Spendarella hit the mark twice and Cairo Memories in one race.

New Year’s Eve raced in blinkers for the first time and Walsh seemed confident the equipment change had helped propel the filly to easily the best performance of her career. Walsh said it would take a few days to consider immediate options with the filly.
McKulick, a solid second making her first start since last fall, will be aimed at the Wonder Again on June 9 at Belmont or the Regret on June 4 at Churchill, trainer Chad Brown said. Brown said he’d freshen third-place finisher Dolce Zel with an eye toward the Lake George on July 22 at Saratoga.
