DEL MAR, Calif. – Blingismything was beaten 2 3/4 lengths in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes at Santa Anita on June 27, the victim of a tough journey on the final turn of the one-mile turf race. Jockey Tyler Baze was forced to wait at a pivotal point, and Blingismything finished sixth behind Fanticola. Could she have won? It’s a tough question for trainer Eric Kruljac to answer. “She would have been right there, within a half-length,” he said on Wednesday. On Saturday, Blingismything can win the most prestigious and lucrative race of her career in the $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes for fillies and mares going 1 1/8 miles on turf at Del Mar. Once again, Fanticola is a rival whom Kruljac fears. Fanticola has won two turf stakes this year and was beaten a nose and a neck when second in the Grade 3 Santa Barbara Handicap and Grade 1 Gamely Stakes. Blingismything won the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes, which did not include Fanticola, and was third behind Fanticola in the Gamely. “We can’t seem to get by Fanticola,” Kruljac said. “Maybe on the different course we’ll be luckier.” Kruljac is keeping Blingismything at Los Alamitos this summer. “I keep a lot of horses out of the grind,” he said. “She’s been up there, and she’s thriving.” Owned by Class Racing Stable, the 5-year-old Blingismything was scheduled to be sent to Del Mar on Thursday. By Arch, Blingismything has won 4 of 12 starts and earned $282,580. The Grade 2 Mabee has an expected field of nine. Besides Blingismything, the other probables are Elektrum, Emotional Kitten, Fanticola, Gusto Dolce, Notte d’Oro, Personal Diary, Queen of The Sand, and Stormy Lucy. Found Money, Swipe top Best Pal Found Money, the winner of the Santa Anita Juvenile on June 21, and Swipe, the winner of the Summer Juvenile Championship at Los Alamitos on July 12, are the leading contenders in Saturday’s $200,00 Best Pal Stakes for 2-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs. The field of expected starters includes Nyquist, the sharp winner of a maiden race at Santa Anita on June 5. Found Money and Nyquist are trained by Doug O’Neill. Other candidates are Annie’s Candy, Bistraya, and Paynes Prairie. Gabriel Charles eyes Million Gabriel Charles, the winner of the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf July 18, is scheduled to start in the Arlington Million on Aug. 15. Trainer Jeff Mullins said Gabriel Charles will work on turf at Del Mar this weekend and is scheduled to be flown to Arlington Park on next Wednesday. Owned by Michael House and Sam Britt, Gabriel Charles made his third start of the year in the Eddie Read, the most prestigious win of his career. He missed 2014 because of a tendon injury.
