Bishop's Pond an easy winner in Winter Melody
Bishop's Pond began her career by making 20 consecutive starts on turf but found her true calling when trainer Jason Servis switched her to the main track a year ago. Bishop's Pond improved her main-track record to 3 for 6 on Wednesday at Delaware Park by posting an easy win in the $50,000 Winter Melody Stakes.
The 1 1/16-mile Winter Melody was Bishop's Pond's second career stakes win following the one-mile Thirty Eight Go Go at Laurel Park in January. The 6-year-old daughter of Curlin is now 6 for 28.
Jockey Trevor McCarthy put Bishop's Pond right on the lead in the Winter Melody and then took a rating hold. She disposed of even-money favorite Tequilita on the far turn and opened up a sizable lead before reaching the stretch. She cruised home to win by 4 1/2 lengths.
Bishop's Pond paid $4.60 in the Winter Melody, which had 12 entrants but scratched down to a six-horse field. She was timed in 1:43.20.
Hey Niki, the most lightly raced runner in the field, lodged a mild bid after the winner but never got within hailing distance. Enthrall rallied from last with a wide move to finish third, a head behind Hey Niki. It was 5 1/2 lengths farther back to Tequilita in fourth.
Bishop's Pond is campaigned by Michael Dubb, Bethlehem Stables, and the Elkstone Group.
