Billy's Star chases down favorite to win Victoria Park

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Billy’s Star ($7.60) notched his first stakes from off the pace Sunday in the $140,100 Victoria Park at Woodbine.
Alan Garcia rode Billy’s Star for the first time and had him trailing on the outside as they went down the backstretch in the nine-furlong test for 3-year-olds.
Billy’s Star commenced a wide rally around the quarter pole and caught the favored Conquest Pacemaker at the sixteenth pole before edging away for a 1 1/4-length score in 1:51.42.
The Kentucky shipper Firespike caught Conquest Pacemaker late to finish second in a field reduced to six after the scratch of Conquest Cobra.
Billy’s Star banked $90,000 for the Perfect Timber Partnership and trainer Roger Attfield, who sent him out to finish fourth after making an early move July 5 in the Queen’s Plate.
“He’s got a good turn of foot,” said Attfield. “I said to Alan that he’ll sit off the pace, no problem, and he’s got a decent quarter-of-a-mile kick. It all worked out well.”
