Biggs, owner-breeder, dead at 74

Hays Biggs, who raced multiple stakes winner Miss Seffens, died Tuesday night following a battle with cancer. He was 74.

A longtime owner and breeder from Springdale, Ark., Biggs also raced stakes winners Etbauer, who won the Grade 3 Rebel in 1999, Desert Force, Tricky Six, Tiger Six, and Mr. Jester.

Services will be held at Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale at 2 p.m. Central on Friday.

Biggs founded Packaging Specialties Inc. in 1974 and also developed a Thoroughbred farm, Willow Oak Acres. He was a director of the Arkansas Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and was a popular figure at his home track of Oaklawn Park.

"He will be sorely missed," said Steve Wren, longtime trainer for Biggs and his wife, Kaaren. "He was more than an owner. He was like a father to me."
