Big Union edges At Attention in SW Randall Plate
Big Union, with Silvio Morales aboard, took a narrow victory over At Attention in the SW Randall Plate at Hastings on Saturday.
Pay My Way, trained by Charlene Miller, was another head back in third, missing by just a neck for the win in the $50,000 race for older runners over 1 1/8 miles .
Big Union paid $15.90 to win while earning the winner's share of $27,500 in taking his second stakes of the season for trainer Nicole Rycroft.
The early pace was moderate, with splits of :24.06, :48.57, and 1:13.57, and the entire field was clustered within four lengths for most of the way. The winning time over nine furlongs was 1:51.12 over a fast strip.
Co-featured on the card was the $50,000 Delta Colleen Handicap, which featured prohibitive favorite Infinite Patience, sent away at just under 2-5 while in search of her 18th win from 20 fast-track starts on traditional dirt.
The two-time B.C. Horse of the Year did not disappoint her many backers as she was quick to clear the outside post and get over to the inside before racing well in hand and on the lead all the way.
Infinite Patience ($2.70) first turned back a mild bid by Wandalita as they headed for the final turn and then held safe We B Three by two lengths. It was another 8 1/4 lengths to Wandalita in third.
Antonio Reyes rode the winner for trainer Barbara Heads and owners William Decoursey and R N H Stable. Reyes kept the mare well under wraps during the 8 1/2-furlong race and only let her go once they were about halfway through her impromptu victory lap.
Infinite Patience covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.81 while earning the winner's share of $27,500. The daughter of Sungold and Montero has now started in 16 stakes events on natural dirt and won them all.
