INGLEWOOD, Calif. - With a pick six carryover of $109,818 from Sunday and a longstanding guarantee of $300,000 for the Memorial Day program on Monday, the holiday pick-six pool is now expected to greatly surpass the guarantee. In the feature race, the Shoemaker Mile, favored Ventura is a likely scratch. Monday's pick six covers the fifth through 10th races and includes the $250,000 Shoemaker Mile, a Grade 1 race on turf. There were early scratches in three of the pick six races. In the fifth race, No Grande has been withdrawn from a $12,500 claimer at a distance of 5 1/2 furlongs. In the seventh race, a $20,000 claimer at seven furlongs, Waive Liability and Swiss Ski will not start, leaving a field of 10. The Shoemaker Mile is expected to have seven starters. Ventura, the 5-year-old millionaire mare and prerace favorite, was expected to be withdrawn on Monday morning because of a foot problem. In her absence, the key horses are Whatsthescript, who was third in the Breeders Cup Mile at Santa Anita last October; Hyperbaric, who won the Grade 1 Citation Handicap here last November; and Dixie Chatter, the winner of the Grade 2 Arcadia Handicap at Santa Anita last month. The final race, a maiden claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs, had 14 entrants, but is down to 10 starters after the withdrawal of Boomtown, Downtown Banker, Fire Scout, and Sovereign Lord.
