Big plans for juvenile stakes winners Shotgun Kowboy, Pain and Misery

Shotgun Kowboy and Pain and Misery were romping winners of 2-year-old stakes in Oklahoma and New Mexico last week, and are now both candidates for some of the Southwest’s most significant races for their division.
Shotgun Kowboy is headed next to the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot on Nov. 22, said his breeder, owner, and trainer, C.R. Trout. The horse improved his record to 2 for 3 when he cruised to a 6 1/2-length victory in the $85,500 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile last Friday night at Remington Park. For the effort, he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 80.
“He came back really good,” Trout said. “We haven’t seen him go two turns, and I think he’ll go good around two turns.
“I just can’t tell you how mature this colt is for a 2-year-old. You can do just about whatever you want to do with him.”
Trout said depending on how Shotgun Kowboy exits the Jackpot, he could see action in the $250,000 Springboard at Remington on Dec. 14.
Pain and Misery was a 7 1/4-length winner of the $55,000 Governor’s Cup at Zia Park on Oct. 13. He covered six furlongs in 1:09.56, and earned a Beyer of 78. Trainer Henry Dominguez said the horse owned by Black Gold Racing is a candidate for the Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland Park in December.
“He’s a real good horse,” Dominguez said. “We have real high hopes. He reminds me of a horse I had a long time ago, Song of Navarone. We’re going to try to take the same trail with him.”
Song of Navarone, a multiple stakes winner of $757,858, missed by a neck in the $136,499 Riley Allison Futurity back in 2006, and a few months later won the $600,000 WinStar Derby.
Meet dates set for Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Racing Commission at a meeting last week approved 2015 dates for the state’s tracks, according to an official. Remington has been awarded a 67-date Thoroughbred meet from Aug. 14 through Dec. 13. The track’s 50-date meet for Quarter Horses is to run from March 6 through May 30.
Will Rogers Downs near Tulsa will open its 2015 season with a 30-date Thoroughbred meet from March 16 through May 26. The track’s 28-date meet for Quarter Horses will run from Aug. 29 through Nov. 14.
Fair Meadows in Tulsa will conduct a 34-date mixed meet from June 4 through July 25.
Also during the meeting, the commission suspended owner-trainer Ralph Muniz for five years and fined him $10,000 for one of his horses testing positive for the Class 1 drug dermorphin. The case stems from an April 26 race at Remington Park in which A Country Boy Can finished 10th in a $10,000 conditioned claimer for Quarter Horses.
Remington winner to Santa Anita?
Bringinginthelute, who won the Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf last Friday night at Remington, could be headed for the downhill course at Santa Anita, said her owner and trainer, C.R. Trout. She put up a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 84 for her fast-closing win in the 7 1/2-furlong Distaff Turf.
“I want to take her to Santa Anita and run her down the hill 6 1/2 [furlongs],” Trout said. “That’s what I’d like to do. We’ve got good friends out there we could send her to. Just one time I’d like to try it.”
Trout said he is just starting to look over the division’s stakes offerings for fillies and mares at Santa Anita.
Bringinginthelute is a 4-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute.
◗ Heritage Place, the auction house in Oklahoma City, will conduct its third annual winter mixed Thoroughbred sale on Dec. 13, according to Spence Kidney, general manager of Heritage Place. Entries to the sale are being received through Nov. 15.
◗ Sky Full of Stars, a full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Zensational, is being pointed for the $100,000 Clever Trevor for 2-year-olds at seven furlongs at Remington Park next month, according to his trainer, J.R. Caldwell. The horse won his debut in his lone career start Sept. 25. Caldwell said debut winner Farnell is also a candidate for the Clever Trevor.
