Big-fig Baby Yoda could step up in Vosburgh

ELMONT, N.Y. – Baby Yoda, who earned a whopping 114 Beyer Speed Figure for winning a first-level allowance race Sept. 4 at Saratoga, is under consideration for the Grade 2, $250,000 Vosburgh Stakes on Oct. 9, trainer Bill Mott said.
“I think that’s a very big jump for him but I’ve got some very enthusiastic owners who are anxious to see what’s going to be in the race and see how we stack up,” Mott said. “I’m generally a little more conservative and like to go through their conditions. If it looks like the Vosburgh is coming up maybe a small field and it looks like we’ve got any chance, I think everybody wants to see if he fits in a spot like that.”

Baby Yoda, who debuted in Maryland for maiden $10,000 claiming, was purchased privately by a group headed by Adam Wachtel following a third-place finish in an allowance race at Pimlico in June. Baby Yoda won a starter allowance at Saratoga in July before he took a first-level allowance by 4 1/4 lengths, running 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.33.
Nominations to the Vosburgh close this weekend. Among those pointing to the race are Firenze Fire and Following Sea.
