Big field expected for Tropical Park Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A full field is shaping up for Saturday’s Tropical Park Derby for 3-year-olds, led by Grade 2 winner Wallyanna, Smooth Daddy, and Cabo Cat. Also to be run here Saturday is the Tropical Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies. Both are $75,000 races at 1 1/16 miles on turf.
Entries for the Tropical Park Derby will be drawn Wednesday and are expected to include Best Plan Yet, Breitling Flyer, Daddy’s Kid, Idiosyncratic, Ironicus, Other Cheek, and Shiva Ryan.
Trainer David Fawkes said Tuesday he remained undecided whether to run Daring Kathy in the Tropical Park Oaks. Daring Kathy likely would be the favorite if she starts, coming off a pair of stakes wins at Gulfstream Park West that included a wire-to-wire triumph in the Grade 3 My Charmer on Nov. 22.
◗ Trainer Dave Vivian’s wife, Barbara, died this week following a long illness. A wake will be held at Fred Hunter’s Funeral Home at 6701 Taft St. in Hollywood, Fla., from 2-4 p.m. on Friday.
