ARCADIA, Calif. - Big City Lights won his stakes debut in a dramatic running of the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Futurity at Santa Anita on Sunday, the first 2-year-old stakes of the year in Southern California. Big City Lights won the five-furlong race by 7 1/4 lengths, leading throughout under jockey Juan Hernandez. On the backstretch, Big City Lights led narrowly over 7-2 Street Art, when that colt took up sharply while racing in tight quarters on the inside. Because of the incident, Street Art dropped back to last in a field of five on the turn and eventually finished fourth. The stewards conducted a five-minute inquiry, but did not change the order of finish. The stewards ruled jockey Kent Desormeaux tried to place Street Art in a position without sufficient space. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports “Something happened, but I was clear,” Hernandez said. “He broke really sharp and I was clear in front probably three or four jumps away from the gate.” Big City Lights ($2.40) ran five furlongs in 58.20 seconds.
