Big Changes wins 2018 Unbridled Stakes
Hodges Photography / Ann Switalski Big Changes (red silks) notched his third straight stakes win with the Unbridled.

Big Changes won his fourth consecutive race – and third straight stakes – when he held off Mocito Rojo by a neck in the $60,000 Unbridled run on yielding turf Sunday at Louisiana Downs.

It was another neck back to Potomac River in third.

The Unbridled, for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles, was one of seven stakes on a card that featured the Grade 3, $300,000 Super Derby won by Limation ($54.80).

Big Changes ($2.80) stalked the pace in the early stages, with Pilot House and Requisite putting up respective fractions of 24.01 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.78 for the half-mile. Big Changes took the lead through six furlongs in 1:12.97 and proceeded to cover the distance in 1:44.17.

Florent Geroux was aboard for trainer Brad Cox.

Big Changes started his streak June 19, when he won his 6-year-old debut in an optional $50,000 claiming race at Indiana Grand. He then won the $50,000 John Henry on July 7 at Evangeline Downs and the $75,000 West Virginia Speaker’s Cup on Aug. 4 at Mountaineer.

Big Changes earned $36,000 for his win Sunday, which was his eighth career victory in 20 starts. He has now earned $357,550. Big Changes is a son of Midshipman and races for Steve Landers.

Taylor's Spirit wins Happy Ticket

Geroux also won the $60,000 Happy Ticket, the first stakes on the card, with Taylor’s Spirit. She improved her career record to 3 for 3 with her 3 3/4-length victory over Flatoutandfoxy. The winner came into the Happy Ticket for 2-year-old fillies at a mile on turf off a score in the $65,000 Prairie Gold Lassie at Prairie Meadows.

Taylor's Spirit ($2.20) was with the pace, running with Timeformetofly through fractions of 24.02 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.83 seconds for the half-mile. The eventual winner took over through six furlongs in 1:13.53, then went on to cover the distance on firm turf in 1:37.91.

Scott Gelner trains Taylor’s Spirit, a daughter of Algorithms, for Mark Norman and Norman Stables.

Yes Gorgeous takes Elge Rasberry

Gelner was back in the winner’s circle for the $60,000 Elge Rasberry, after trainee Yes Gorgeous darted to a two-length win over Savvy Shipman. The mile turf race was for 3-year-old fillies bred in Louisiana.

Yes Gorgeous ($6.40) was always prominent and covered the distance on firm turf in 1:37.54.

Gelner also owns Yes Gorgeous, who is a daughter of Mass Media. Diego Saenz was aboard the winner, one of four stakes victories he had on the card in a run that included the Super Derby.

Icy City Ghost hot in Sunday Silence

Saenz registered his first stakes win on the card with Ice City Ghost, who registered the first win of his career in the $60,000 Sunday Silence. The mile turf race was for 2-year-olds.

Ice City Ghost ($42.20) was making the second start of his career, behind a fourth-place finish in a maiden allowance sprint at Evangeline Downs. He made all the pace Sunday en route to covering the distance on firm ground in 1:37.63.

Carl Deville trains Ice City Ghost for his breeder, Dream Walkin’ Farms. The horse is by Ice Box.

Bermuda Star shines in River Cities

Saenz was back in the winner’s circle after the $60,000 River Cities, with his mount Bermuda Star winning by a head over even-money favorite Hachi. It was the third straight photo Hachi has been involved in, finishing second in each. It was another two lengths back to Holiday’s Angel in third.

Bermuda Star ($8.40) rallied from well off the pace to catch Hachi on the wire, covering the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares in 1:44.35. The turf was yielding after rain hit during the card. Bermuda Star is a daughter of Star Guitar and races for Brittlyn Stable and is trained by Victor Arceneaux.

Battle At Sea takes A.L. 'Red' Erwin

Battle At Sea ($3.20) was always prominent to win the $60,000 A.L. "Red" Erwin by 1 3/4 lengths over Big Boy Dave Rex. The race for 3-year-olds bred in Louisiana was meant for a mile on turf, but was moved to a sloppy main track and run at a distance of one-mile and 70 yards. Battle At Sea won on the sealed surface in 1:44.07.

Colby Hernandez was aboard for trainer Mike Maker. Battle At Sea is a son of Into Mischief and races for Three Diamonds Farm.
