The Big Beast has breakout sale

Nicole Russo|Mar 14, 2019
The Big Beast
Barbara D. Livingston The Big Beast saw several juveniles from his first crop stand out at last week’s under-tack preview show.

The Big Beast, a Grade 1-winning sprinter, may have passed his speed on to his progeny. Several juveniles from his first crop stood out at last week’s under-tack preview show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s March sale.

One of those fillies then stepped up to sell for $850,000 to West Point Thoroughbreds and partners, tying for the top price by a freshman sire and for the fourth-highest price of the sale.

The Florida-bred filly was bred and consigned by Ocala Stud, which stands The Big Beast. She is out of the winning Trippi mare Lucky Trip, dam of seven winners from as many starters. The mare is a full sister to Grade 1-placed stakes winner Candrea and stakes winner Dream of Angels.

The filly breezed a quarter-mile in 20 4/5 seconds on the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack surface. She was one of several juveniles tied just two ticks off the bullet for the distance, 20 2/5 seconds.

A colt by The Big Beast breezed a furlong, the traditional work distance for 2-year-old sales, in 9 3/5 seconds to hold the bullet for that distance. He later sold to trainer Peter Miller, as agent, for $450,000. Also a Florida-bred, the colt was consigned to sale by L.G., as agent. He is out of the winning Our Emblem mare Raebear, dam of four winners from six starters.

Overall, The Big Beast sent six juveniles through the ring at OBS March, with all selling for an average price of $247,000. The stallion stands for an advertised fee of $6,000.

The Big Beast, by Yes It’s True, scored his breakthrough victory in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes in 2014 at Saratoga. The following summer, he returned there to run second to two multiple Grade 1 winners in a pair of Grade 1 sprints, beaten a nose by Rock Fall in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt, and finishing second to Private Zone in the Forego.
