The Big Beast colt records fastest furlong to close out OBS breeze show

Nicole Russo|Mar 09, 2019

In a season with one of the most highly anticipated freshman sire classes in recent memory, it was a juvenile by one of those freshmen who broke through a crowded leaderboard to record the overall fastest furlong time as the under-tack preview show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale of 2-year-olds in training concluded with its third session on Saturday.

A colt from the first crop of The Big Beast breezed a furlong, the traditional work distance for 2-year-old sales, in 9 3/5 seconds on Saturday morning on the Ocala Training Center's Safetrack surface. Another 22 juveniles recorded times of 9 4/5 seconds over the three days of the breeze show, including offspring of freshman sires Fast Anna, Karakontie, Majestic City, Race Day, Secret Circle, Tapiture, and Wicked Strong.

The Big Beast, by Yes It's True, stands at Ocala Stud. He scored his breakthrough victory in the Grade 1 King's Bishop Stakes in 2014 at Saratoga. The following summer, he returned to the historic track to run second to a pair of multiple Grade 1 winners in a pair of Grade 1 sprints, beaten a nose by Rock Fall in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt, and second to Private Zone in the Forego.

The Big Beast's bullet worker, a Florida-bred, is consigned to sale by L.G., as agent. The colt is out of the winning Our Emblem mare Raebear, dam of four winners from six starters. She is a half-sister to group stakes placed Speed Hawk, and is also a half to the winning Somalia, dam of Grade 3 winners Lookin For Eight and Miss Mo Mentum.

Among those juveniles who stretched out to work a quarter-mile rather than the more traditional furlong, fillies by Super Saver and Goldencents shared the fastest times, each breezing in 20 2/5 seconds.

The Super Saver filly, who worked Friday to establish the fastest quarter, is consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, as agent. She is out of the Grade 2-placed Majestic Warrior mare Macha. Graded/group stakes winners Cyber Secret, Maldita Primavera, and Pure Silver appear on the catalog page.

The Goldencents filly, whose work came by Saturday, is consigned by Blazing Meadows Farm, as agent. She is out of the winning Pomeroy mare Pomeroy Angel, a half-sister to stakes winner City Sage. Graded stakes winners Big Jewel and Speak Easy Gal appear on the catalog page.

The OBS March sale, which kicks off the major-market 2-year-old sales season in North America, will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday. For hip-by-hip results from the breeze show, click here.
