A pair of $100,000 stakes races at Gulfstream Park on Saturday will provide American-based runners with a rare international opportunity. In one of the most unique arrangements in American racing, the winners of both races in Florida earn automatic berths in one of six juvenile stakes at Royal Ascot in June. The Royal Palm Juvenile and Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies, both five-furlong turf sprints, are strange and exciting in equal measure, featuring large groups of unproven runners competing under major implications at the earliest point in their careers. In the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies, only four runners in the scheduled field of 12 will enter their stakes debut with a prior start. Satisfied Mind, trained by Wesley Ward, is the clear filly to beat coming off a commanding maiden victory on the dirt at Keeneland. Ward said Thursday that the filly arrived at Gulfstream “in good order.” After leading all the way to win the 4 1/2-furlong race by 3 1/2 lengths in her Kentucky debut, she closely resembles countless speedy juveniles who have previously taken the trip overseas for Ward. In 2009, Ward became the first American trainer to win at Royal Ascot and most recently took the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup with Campanelle in 2021. Trainer Patrick Biancone is one of two trainers, along with Mark Casse, who have entered multiple horses in the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies. Emerald Ember is a first-time starter, while Lennilu will likely be regarded as the more touted runner of the pair coming off an impressive closing victory in her Keeneland debut. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. “She was ready early and the race season at Gulfstream starts a little later, and she achieved what we were hoping,” Biancone said. “She’s well and has trained well. Everything looks good, seeing if she can repeat the same performance on the turf. The plan at the moment is to hopefully win and go to Ascot.” Most horses in the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies field did not show significant promise in auction houses, instead presumably making their mark in morning workouts. The exception to this rule is Bibi Dahl, who will make her first start for trainer Jorge Delgado after selling for $1.35 million at last year’s Keeneland September sale. George Weaver, who won the 2023 running of this race with Crimson Advocate before winning the Group 2 Queen Mary, will enter first-time starter Royal Testament. The filly will break from the rail in her debut. Royal Palm Juvenile While Satisfied Mind is a clear target in the race restricted to fillies earlier in the day, the unrestricted Royal Palm Juvenile is a wide-open affair. The field of 12, plus two also-eligible runners, offers the same sky-high potential as those in the other stakes and even less collective racing experience. Of the three horses in the race with a prior start, Squire was the only debut winner when he closed from fifth to beat Beers On Me, another Royal Palm Juvenile entrant, by a head in a 4 1/2-length dirt sprint at Gulfstream. Biancone said he is happy with Squire’s progress and will consider a trip to Royal Ascot if he delivers again on turf. “He got a little bit unfortunate at the start at the gate,” Biancone said. “When he got a little a bump, he got out of rhythm, but he comes from behind in the morning anyway. I would have preferred him to not lose a couple lengths at the start, but for him, it was not much because they were going so fast and came back to him.” Biancone also entered first-time starter Tully Road, a filly, in the unrestricted stakes. She is one of two fillies running against the boys, along with Irish-bred I Think I Can for Todd Pletcher. Both Biancone and Pletcher have split their fillies between the two stakes. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Weaver drew the rail with Royal Testament in the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies and will have debuting colt Sandal’s Song running inside in the Royal Palm Juvenile. The trainer was succinct while describing both of his runners but said that he is encouraged by their progress. “We run them early,” Weaver said. “If they show they’re quick, they might be able to do it, and that applies to both horses.” Trainer Jose D’Angelo, who won the Palm Royal Juvenile last year with Gabaldon, has four colts entered in this year’s field. Skipping Stars and Hotter Than Dem will have to draw into the field from the also-eligible list, but Ciborio and Fear are currently slated to run. Fear is the only runner in the quartet with experience, having finished third in his dirt debut at Keeneland last month. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
