Beverly Park continues winning ways with 12th victory of 2022

LOUISIVILLE, Ky. -- When Beverly Park led all the way in winning a starter-allowance Wednesday at Churchill, the 5-year-old horse notched his 11th victory of 2022, easily tops in North America. Next in the standings is Exit Right (eight wins), based at Parx Racing.

Beverly Park “is just an amazing animal,” said Norman “Lynn” Cash, who trains the Kentucky-bred son of Munnings in the name of Built Wright Stables, which he owns with his wife, Lola.

Beverly Park, claimed by Cash for $12,500 in August 2021 at Belterra Park, has raced 23 times this year, also believed to be the most in 2022. “He’s never had a joint injected since we’ve had him,” said Cash. “He’s built like a tank, absolutely.”

A starter allowance at Keeneland in mid-October will be next for Beverly Park, said Cash, followed by a start in the Claiming Crown, which is being hosted by Churchill for the first time on Nov. 12.

Cash, 58, has expanded his stable to now include a 20-stall base at Laurel Park in Maryland. He has another 25 or so in Kentucky.

* Gustavo Delgado, looking to establish a foothold in Kentucky while still maintaining the South Florida base he has used since he first began training in the United States in 2014, had his third Churchill winner Thursday evening when Grace’s Secret ($5.30) romped in the third race.

Delgado’s first Churchill win came in the Grade 1 Clark in November 2020 with Bodexpress, who was retired shortly thereafter. The Venezuela native has had two Kentucky Derby starters, Majesto (18th in 2016) and Bodexpress (13th in 2019).

* Letruska, the champion filly-mare dirt runner of 2021, had her first workout since finishing third in the Aug. 27 Personal Ensign at Saratoga, going a half-mile in 48.60 seconds last Saturday at Churchill. The 6-year-old mare is a possibility for the Oct. 9 Spinster at Keeneland ahead of what likely will be her final career start in the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Distaff.
