Beulah Park: Startin Something looks to make amends in Bobbie Bricker
Startin Something looks to return to her winning ways in the $50,000 Bobbie Bricker Memorial at Beulah Park on Saturday. The Tim Hamm trainee has won just once in 2013 but has earned more than $73,000 this year, all in statebred stakes.
Startin Something’s lone win came in her first out of the year May 3 in the Classen Memorial at Thistledown. In her most recent start Nov. 9, she finished up the track in the Ruff/Kirchberg Memorial against statebred boys. Hamm has an excuse for that race.
“She came back okay but had a respiratory condition that I am attributing her poor performance to,” Hamm said. “She has been pretty consistent in her career, but she just flattened out in that race. It is the only explanation I have.”
Hamm thinks going back to running against Ohio-accredited fillies and mares in the Bricker is what Startin Something needs to get her second win of the year.
“I don’t think you could hand pick a better spot for her to get her back winning,” Hamm said.
The 5-year-old Startin Something won the 2012 running of the Bobbie Bricker in front-running fashion by nearly six lengths. She finished third in her first attempt at the Bobbie Bricker as a 3-year-old in 2011.
This will be the last start of the year for Startin Something.
“She is good for 9 to 10 starts a year – this will be her 10th,” Hamm said. “She will go to our farm in Ocala for a few months and just be a horse, and then we will get her ready to run in the spring.”
Irwin Rosendo will retain the mount.
Hamm also sends out Monetary Reward, but she and Startin Something will not be coupled in the wagering in the 11-horse field.
“She fits in there pretty well, I think,” Hamm said. “I think she will like the one mile and a sixteenth distance, and she should run a good race.”
Accredited is the more restrictive of the two Ohio-bred categories, as both the dam and sire must be registered and be in Ohio.
