Beulah Park: Plain Ol' Willard wins Horizon Stakes

John McDulin|Aug 11, 2013

Plain Ol' Willard made quick work of the field of 3-year-old Ohio-bred horses to win the $50,000 Horizon Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths at Beulah Park on Sunday.

Jockey Gabriel Lagunes had a stout hold on Plain Ol' Willard early in the race, which covered one mile and 70 yards. Lagunes let his mount out a notch on the far turn, and Plain Ol' Willard cruised to the lead easily. After drawing clear by two lengths in upper stretch, the Tony Lowry trainee was kept to task to finish in 1:45.76.

Plain Ol' Willard returned $3 to win. Pyrite Mill set the early pace and refused to give up late while finishing second, three-quarters of a length in front of Bold Ben in third.

Later on the card, Stamp Queen, under Brian Hernandez Jr., took over after a quarter-mile and went on to win the $50,000 Vivacious Handicap by 1 3/4 lengths. Stamp Queen was kept to the outside of the pacesetter early in the 1 1/16-mile race before taking over and drawing clear on the backstretch.

The venerable Pay the Man rallied into the stretch but flattened out and finished second, with Uptown Gal third.

The Doug Cowans-trained Stamp Queen finished in 1.46.97 over a fast track and returned $4.20 to win.
