The main event at Santa Anita on Saturday is the Palos Verdes at six furlongs, and it features the two-time Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and soon-to-be two-time Eclipse Award champion male sprinter, ROY H (7). Roy H has been the best dirt sprinter over the past two seasons, and based on his devastating victory in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup, there’s really no reason to believe this 7-year-old gelding will be slowing down anytime soon. As good as Roy H is, it must be said that we’re talking about a gambling game, and as great an athlete as Roy may be, he’s not all that interesting at 1/9 or 1/5 this afternoon. It should also be noted that this race is a prep to have him ready to roll in Dubai for the Golden Shaheen in March, so perhaps this Peter Miller trainee won’t be 100 percent tightened up for this afternoon’s race (to be fair, he may not need to be in order to win). If you’re looking to take a shot against Roy H, I think ST. JOE BAY (4) is a live candidate. John Sadler has done a fantastic job with this 7-year-old gelding, and he’s in great form, having earned a 99 Beyer Speed Figure in his most recent start at Los Alamitos. The most impressive piece of his victory Dec. 14 was his ability to display a new dimension at this point in his career; he successfully sat off horses and ran down a tough veteran in Richard’s Boy, a running style that could work to his advantage this afternoon. I’m going to be playing weighted exactas using only St. Joe Bay and Roy H. I’m hopeful that KANTHAKA (3) and CONQUEST TSUNAMI (5) will take some money, potentially inflating the value of the 4/7 or 7/4 exactas. :: WIN A TRIP TO THE QUEEN'S PLATE: Click here to cast your vote for the 2018 Horse of the Year contest, and be entered to win a trip for two to the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine!
