The late pick four at Santa Anita on Saturday is highlighted by the $70,000 Wishing Well Stakes for fillies and mares going down the hill, a race that is likely to feature a heavy favorite. I’m interested in putting together some pick-four tickets using a pseudo-DRF TicketMaker style; rather than the typical As-Bs-Cs, I’m planning on just using main plays and backup plays. Here’s how I’m planning on attacking the sequence. RACE 7 TRIFECTA (5) was hung miserably wide throughout the run Jan. 19 at this level; according to Trakus, he ran 27 feet more than the winner that day (For Greater Glory) and 47 feet more than the runner-up. He fits among these runners from both a Beyer and TimeformUS speed-figure standpoint and should be a square number. FOR GREATER GLORY (6) drops back to a more appropriate level and distance after trying the Super Bowl Handicap on Super Bowl Sunday; he may have had a much better trip two back against Trifecta, but I’m not convinced that Trifecta didn’t run just as well – if not better. CONQUEST SABRE CAT (1) also exits the Super Bowl Handicap, and a repeat of his effort two back against tougher likely puts him in the thick of things as they turn for home. I’ll also include CARDIAC (3) and MALKO (7) as backups. RACE 8 KARMIC AFFINITY (10) is the most likely winner of the eighth based on her solid debut effort here Jan. 27. Drawing the outside post should give Kent Desormeaux options with this daughter of Storm Wolf. MADAM SOPHIA (4) is a first-time starter for Jerry Hollendorfer, and she merits consideration based on her pedigree alone. A full sister to Sir Vronsky and a half-sister to Sircat Sally, this daughter of Vronsky is bred to be a runner; we’ll find out if she’s ready to fire at first asking. COCO KISSES (7) debuts for Jeff Bonde, a trainer who rarely has his firsters cranked up and ready to roll. This filly’s dam was graded stakes-placed as a 2-year-old, and her half-sister Spin Me a Kiss was a stakes-placed turf sprinter, so it’s possible she’ll overcome the barn’s low first-out strike rate. As far as backups go, I’ll include GET YOURSELF HOME (2) and SMOOVIE (3). RACE 9 LIFE’S BLESSINGS (7) ran a winning race at Santa Anita on Jan. 28 going long, and I think she’s strictly the horse to beat in her second start off the bench for Bob Baffert. After putting the other speeds away in her most recent start, this daughter of Tapit stayed on gamely, just getting nipped over the final 100 yards. The slight turnback in distance should be no issue for her, and she’s likely to be tighter with a race under her belt. I’m not using any other runners in the ninth; it’s either Life’s Blessings or bust for me. RACE 10 – WISHING WELL Bob Baffert could very well sweep the late double, as he debuts the highly regarded SAMBA INC (5) in the Wishing Well for older fillies and mares. Samba Inc was brilliant in winning a Group 1 race in Argentina last May, and it sounds as though she’s breathing fire leading into her first start in North America. In case she’s not quite ready to roll or finds the downhill turf course not to her liking, I’m also using MALIBU STACY (8) as a main play. Malibu Stacy hasn’t tried the downhill turf course yet either, but I think the pace she’s shown in one-mile races should translate well going down the hill. The only backup I’ll use is ALGORHYTHMIC (10), making her first start since July 4.
