Saturday’s featured event at Santa Anita is the Summertime Oaks for 3-year-old fillies, a race that I believe includes some horses that could be vulnerable at short prices. There’s one fresh face in the Summertime Oaks (race six) that I’m interested in, so I’ll play a daily double, hooking up the fifth and sixth races. RACE 5 WISHFUL (3) tired late after making the first move at the pacesetter going down the hill on May 28 in her most recent try. She fits from a TimeformUS standpoint, and she could work out a great trip. HELEN’S TIGER (5) finally broke through to earn her first victory in career start number eight, all for Doug O’Neill, and sometimes that’s all it takes. Once they get the first one out of the way after a prolonged losing streak, some horses are capable of bouncing right back and taking down winners in their first attempt. Both of her hillside efforts have been solid, and she’s a logical use in this race. TOPAZ TIME (7) also broke through to earn her maiden victory in her most recent start (start number 10), but that win came over the main track. She made a mid-race move into a hot pace going long in her only other try on turf, and the 6 ½-furlong trip on Saturday could be to her liking. At a square price, I’ll also include her in my play. RACE 6 - SUMMERTIME OAKS CHOCOLATE MARTINI (5) is strictly the horse to beat in the Summertime Oaks, but her late-running style coupled with the potential lack of pace in this race concerns me - particularly over the Santa Anita main track going a route of ground. A complete unknown at this trip over this surface is OLLIE’S CANDY (6), but this feels like the type of field that could be upset by a fresh face. A perfect 2 for 2, she’s been going shorter in Northern California. This daughter of Candy Ride has strong connections in her corner (Morey/Desormeaux) and should be forwardly placed throughout. She may ultimately not be good enough, but I’m willing to take a chance with her in a race that features a favorite that may be up against it.
