The featured event at Del Mar on Saturday afternoon is the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds on turf, and Chad Brown sends two live charges west in search of grade one glory. I’m interested in keying them in trifectas with a few other runners, weighting my plays accordingly; here’s the play: RACE 7 – HOLLYWOOD DERBY As a multiple graded stakes winner on the east coast, RAGING BULL (6) appears to be one of the likelier winners of this afternoon’s Hollywood Derby for Chad Brown. For one reason or another, this son of Dark Angel didn’t fire in his most recent start, the Hill Prince at Belmont Park, bombing as the 2-5 favorite over turf listed as good. Raging Bull has been given some time off since that poor performance, and a return to form should be expected here. I’ve loved INSTILLED REGARD (7) since he debuted as a 2-year-old at Del Mar last year, and he’s performed admirably as a 3-year-old, winning the Grade 3 Lecomte at Fair Grounds and finishing a solid fourth in this year’s Kentucky Derby. Following a long layoff, this son of Arch made his debut for Chad Brown in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby and laid an enormous egg, finishing last in a field of nine. He, too, has been given plenty of time off following that non-effort, and now he’ll make his turf debut this afternoon. There’s enough turf in this pedigree to suggest he’ll be able to handle the surface (dam is a sibling to multiple Grade 1 turf winner Good Reward), and his two workouts on grass in October were promising, considering he was coupled with Grade 1 winners Robert Bruce and Analyze It in each of the drills. The horses I’m interested in using underneath are RIVER BOYNE (4), DESERT STONE (8) and CARRICK (11). River Boyne is rock-solid and consistent as they come, Desert Stone has flashed ability throughout his career and will appreciate the nine-furlong trip of this event, and Carrick is the lone Grade 1 winner in this afternoon’s field, winning the Secretariat two starts back.
