Bentornato out of training

Bentornato, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last November, is out of training because of a sesamoid injury but is expected to return to racing in 2027, trainer Jose D’Angelo said on Thursday.

A 5-year-old, Bentornato finished a game second to Book’em Danno in the Grade 3 True North Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga on June 6 in his second start this year. Bentornato breezed a half-mile at Saratoga on July 4. The injury was detected “a few days ago,” D’Angelo said.

Bentornato will be “outside the track for a couple of months,” D’Angelo said. “He’s got a small sesamoid fracture. The doctor said he has a good prognosis.”

Owned by Leon King Stable and TCC Stable, Bentornato has won 7 of 13 starts and earned $2,802,180. The BC Sprint was Bentornato’s sixth and most recent stakes win.

In his first start this year, Bentornato was second in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai, finishing 1 3/4 lengths behind the locally-based Dark Saffron.
