OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Over a 50-year training career in which has won 4,120 races from 20,209 starters, Gerald Bennett has rarely been seen on the New York Racing Association circuit. His two starters at NYRA include Beau Genius, who finished 10th in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont Park – yes, Belmont used to host the Breeders’ Cup – and Irish Lion, who finished last in a turf allowance at Saratoga on Aug. 25, 2011. That’s it. Thursday, Bennett, 79, sends out his first Aqueduct starter when he brings the 3-year-old filly Dreaming of Snow up from Monmouth Park for a $105,000 multi-conditioned allowance/optional $80,000 claiming race scheduled for six furlongs on dirt. :: Bet with the Best! Dreaming of Snow is coming off a layoff, is the lone 3-year-old in a field of seven fillies and mares, and has some dirtied-up form entering this spot. But she has run races that make her competitive in this spot, most notably a victory in the Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in February, where she beat Wonder Wheel, the 2-year-old filly champion of 2022. After that, Bennett ran her in the Grade 3 Florida Oaks on turf, where she finished last of 12, and then a Florida-bred sprint stakes on dirt, where she ran into the ultra-speedy Munnys Gold who set a track record of 1:20.09 for seven furlongs, winning by 17 1/2 lengths. Bennett said Dreaming of Snow came out of the race with a small ankle chip that he decided to have removed. Dreaming of Snow has been breezing since late July, and Bennett had been looking for a third-level allowance at Monmouth or Delaware Park before finding one in New York. Bennett is using the race to get her prepared for the Tampa Bay Downs meet that begins in November. Bennett said Dreaming of Snow did miss a work in late September because Monmouth officials “kept closing the track. Then we had five days of rain and bad tracks. Otherwise, she’s been training really good. I looked at the race and they got a lot older horses with a lot of high earnings in there, so it won’t be easy.” Javier Castellano rides from post 6. The 6-year-old mare Mosienko is a 10-time winner, half of those wins coming at Aqueduct. She is turning back to six furlongs out of a mile race that had similar conditions as this where she finished behind Nostalgic and Gerrymander, the latter a 25-length winner of Sunday’s off-the-turf Noble Damsel Stakes match race at Aqueduct. Self Isolation, trained by David Jacobson, has won three of her last five starts, all at Mid-Atlantic tracks. She returns to Aqueduct, where she did win twice last fall including a third-level allowance going seven furlongs. Isaac Castillo rides from post 4. Rosebug returns from a layoff for Bill Mott following a third-place finishing behind Headland in a July 21 optional claimer at Saratoga. She did win her first starts of the year, an allowance at Gulfstream and one at Belmont. Rachel’s Rock, Hey Mamaluke, and Captainsdaughter complete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
