2023 Belmont Stakes possibles
Post | Horse/ Best Beyer | Trainer/ Jockey | Morning Line Odds | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1. | Tapit Shoes 91 | Brad Cox Jose Ortiz | 20-1 | ||||
Brad Free: By world-class stallion who sired four Belmont winners, forwardly placed running style suits tepid pace scenario. | |||||||
David Aragona: Did well to battle back after contesting fast pace last time; bred to be a good one, but this is a major class test. | |||||||
2. | Tapit Trice 99 | Todd Pletcher Luis Saez | 3-1 | ||||
Brad Free: Blue Grass winner prior to Kentucky Derby seventh, long-striding gray figures to relish mile and a half, will roll late. | |||||||
David Aragona: His Derby wasn't great, but he showed quality prior and seems far better suited to this race; checks a lot of boxes. | |||||||
3. | Arcangelo 97 | Jena Antonucci Javier Castellano | 8-1 | ||||
Brad Free: Lightly raced Peter Pan winner trying to emulate Tonalist, the 2014 Belmont winner in fifth start after same prep win. | |||||||
David Aragona: Intriguing colt progressing with each start; shares female family with Belmont winners Rags to Riches and Jazil. | |||||||
4. | National Treasure 98 | Bob Baffert John Velazquez | 5-1 | ||||
Brad Free: Light bulb on when blinkers added in slow-pace Preakness win, fresh colt working well, advantageous running style. | |||||||
David Aragona: Not sure what to make of Preakness win over depleted field with a pace advantage; still has something to prove. | |||||||
5. | Il Miracolo 77 | Antonio Sano Marcos Meneses | 30-1 | ||||
Brad Free: Lost four previous graded stakes by double-digit margins, longest shot in the field seems to be in over his head. | |||||||
David Aragona: Could affect the pace after showing newfound early speed in victory last time; highly doubt he's around late. | |||||||
6. | Forte 100 | Todd Pletcher Irad Ortiz, Jr. | 5-2 | ||||
Brad Free: Champion 2022 juvenile male and Florida Derby winner scratched from Ky. Derby, 10-week layoff, working well. | |||||||
David Aragona: Training up to a race as demanding as the Belmont is no easy feat; still wonder if he's progressed since last year. | |||||||
7. | Hit Show 98 | Brad Cox Manny Franco | 10-1 | ||||
Brad Free: Cannot fault upward pattern; Derby fifth looms live longshot in race frequently won by unplaced Derby starters. | |||||||
David Aragona: Made an early move into Derby's hot pace, and hung in gamely late; could be right there with another step forward. | |||||||
8. | Angel of Empire 104 | Brad Cox Flavien Prat | 7-2 | ||||
Brad Free: Late-runner adds blinkers following third-place finish as Kentucky Derby favorite, last-out speed figure tops field. | |||||||
David Aragona: Ran his race in the Derby, but was with the race flow; don't love the blinker change since on obvious contender. | |||||||
9. | Red Route One 92 | Steve Asmussen Joel Rosario | 15-1 | ||||
Brad Free: Late-runner faces same challenge in Belmont as his fourth in Preakness: he consistently ranks below division elite. | |||||||
David Aragona: Was badly pace-compromised in Preakness; feels like he'll stay the distance, just still hasn't ever run a fast race. | |||||||

Belmont Stakes moves to Saratoga for 2024, purse bumped to $2 million
The final leg of the American Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes, a 1 1/2 mile race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, every June. The race carries a purse of $1.5 million and usually draws one of if not both the winners of the Kentucky Derby and/or Preakness Stakes.
The Belmont Stakes is unusual in that most of the runners in the field have never gone 12 furlongs, nor will they ever go that distance again, so it is called The Test of the Champion due to the need for stamina. But because of its position as the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes can be quite the event in racing when a horse with a chance to sweep the Triple is entered. That honor most recently went to Justify in 2018.
The Belmont Stakes heads a spectacular weekend of racing at Belmont Park, with three stakes races held on the Thursday of Belmont week, and another five races held on Friday. On the Belmont Stakes undercard are races such as the $1 million Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile), the $750,000 Manhattan, the $500,000 Acorn, and the $500,000 Ogden Phipps - all are Grade 1 events. This card of racing is considered to be second only to the Breeders’ Cup for its exceptional quality and eight Grade 1 races on a single program.
Three fillies have won the Belmont Stakes, most recently with Rags to Riches in 2007. The 2022 victor was Mo Donegal.
